The 2023 WTA Finals came up with a turbulent twist, leaving fans and players alike in disarray. Neither the players who participated nor the spectators can forget the not-so-perfect event. But even after receiving an apology from the WTA, the debacle over players’ rights is still going on. And now, with time, Novak Djokovic‘s PTPA has also stepped into controversy to fight for the players’ rights over the same concern.

Subsequently, the Serbian tennis player’s brainchild continues to uphold players’ rights above all as he revisits the WTA Cancun debacle. Let’s take a look at what PTPA’s executive director, Ahmad Nassar, has to say about players’ suffering in the last WTA event of the year.

Over a month has passed since the chaotic and fiercely contested year-end tournament. But recently, the PTPA’s executive director, in an interview with Tennis.com, dwelt on the WTA controversy and opened up that even after players suffered, there was no formal response from the association.

But at the same time, they talked about how they are trying to bring out the best for the players while highlighting how things have changed. Given all the problems, including the infrastructure, weather, and attendance, they have held a couple of meetings between the WTA and some players.

Even after trying their best, the then CEO, Steve Simon, didn’t exactly give a full defense and explanation of the problems. He said, “Gusts of wind were blowing the players’ visors off during matches because it was still hurricane season. Attendance was lackluster. It was almost comical but it was so sad, especially because the previous year’s finals in Fort Worth was also problematic.”

Further, he also questioned how it’s been 2 years since this problem has been reoccurring, players are raising questions, and the WTA is still doing the same. Along with that, he also stated that even though he understands that WTA was hit with a double whammy by COVID, on the other hand, the rift with China earlier this year also created a problem with them.

“But two years on a row? How did we end up, without a WTA Finals venue until deep into, or right after, the US Open?” he added. The PTPA is helping the players stand their ground so that they can have better sporting events and make their voices reach the associations in the bigger picture. However, a couple of weeks ago, the Serb’s rebel association also warned the WTA over the same concern.

Djokovic’s rebel association issued a warning to the WTA

While the most minute disruptions can create chaos, this year’s WTA final was nothing less than a chaotic event in itself. Although it was a huge blunder for the players, as they were somewhere supportive of giving their 100% during the tournament, the players’ association stepped in with them to get a response from the WTA.

The PTPA issued a statement reading, “Now that the event is behind us, we hereby invite the WTA to co-commission an independent, third-party report that delves into the numerous, glaring breakdowns that occurred over the past several months.” Unfortunately, even after a lot of meetings with the WTA and the players, they are still trying to figure out a way that will go best with the players.
