Nick Kyrgios' comment on Sinner's girlfriend—justified banter or crossing the line?

There seems no light at the end of the tunnel for Nick Kyrgios after the comments he made on social media during the US Open. Remember the controversial throwback picture of the Aussie tennis star with Jannik Sinner’s girlfriend, Anna Kalinskaya? Well, there was no problem with the picture as it was from the time when the two were reportedly dating, but it captured everyone’s gaze when Kyrgios made an offensive comment while responding to it, and he bore the brunt, as he received immense flak from the fans. However, the tough days are not over for him! The Ex-WTA star, Alexandra Stevenson, joins the bandwagon in criticizing the Aussie for his choice of words. She also reminded Kyrgios of the dire consequences.

At the US Open, Kyrgios took the role of commentator for ESPN and everyone anticipated the Aussie to be more aware of his words not just while commentating, but on social media as well. However, things went downhill when he commented “Second serve” to one of his old pictures with Kalinskaya that was shared by someone on X.

What followed next was a sharp reaction from the fans as the comment was considered very offensive. Talking about the story, Stevenson said, “Nick Kyrgios tweeted back and wrote the second serve about Kalinskaya.” Moreover what shocked the tennis world was the fact that all this while, Kyrgios was commentating on women’s matches and even after making the controversial comment, the Aussie showed up “like nothing happened. He didn’t get in any trouble,” as Stevenson said.

Well, Kyrgios might not have gotten into any trouble officially, but he did face criticism on social media. He was called “misogynistic,” his ouster from ESPN was demanded and he even deleted the controversial reply. But one thing that Stevenson fails to understand is “Why is he being so bad to WTA women players?” The furious former American star further said, “What do you think about him saying second serve? Is it like sloppy seconds? Like, Jannik, you have my second serve now?”

Stevenson’s co-host Hugues Laverdière tried to balance it out, as he said, “It could be a couple of different angles here. I don’t know which one to take. There’s a couple of…” It certainly can mean a couple of things. But nobody knows what was the intent behind Kyrgios’ words. However, it undoubtedly cost the Aussie his reputation as a commentator.

Moreover, Stevenson further highlighted the fact that Kyrgios was lucky to be still on TV because the television channels don’t take such mis-steps lightly. Once a similar incident cost a commentator his career at the Olympics.

Every action has a consequence. Nick Kyrgios may have gotten away lightly after his comment on Kalinskaya, but it certainly left a lot of people disappointed. However, Stevenson still gave him advice to be careful with his words on public platforms, as she recalled a similar instance at the Olympics where a commentator ended up losing his job.

Talking about that incident, Stevenson said, “There was a guy in the Olympics, a commentary team that said something about women… Oh, he said the women’s doubles about the Italian duo who won. He said something about, well, she wears an apron. He said something along the lines that was not very good. And they ousted him. They ousted him real fast.”

Advising the Aussie tennis star, Stevenson further added, “So Nick better watch his P’s and Q’s because one day it’ll catch up to him. I don’t know if it’ll be in the next five years, but I think he missed the ball on this one.” It will be interesting to see how Nick Kyrgios reacts to the criticism that has followed him after his US Open commentary stint. He is quite active in responding to people. Will he respond to Stevenson? What do you think?
