In the ongoing US Open, as exciting clashes await tennis fans in the second week, expectations on home players have increased threefold. American fans have been awaiting a champion in the ATP circuit for two decades. Since the Big 3 started dominating, players from the US have struggled to reach even the Top 10. The story isn’t a lot different in the WTA Tour. The last American to win the title was Sloane Stephens in 2017. But this year, Coco Gauff and Andre Agassi’s ex-coach Brad Gilbert will look to change that, as American players are slowly making their way to the top positions.
The ATP Tour is witnessing the rise of many promising names from US for the first time since the reign of Agassi and Sampras. The Flushing Meadows this year saw a handful of American players in what seemed after a lifetime.

After Andy Roddick won the US Open in 2003, American men’s tennis had to wait till 2011 to witness at least 3 players in Round 16 of a Grand Slam. Mardy Fish, Roddick, and John Isner made it to the second week of the US Open in 2011. But none of them won a Slam that year or any other year after 2011. The wait for an American ATP Slam champion continues, and this year, hopes are high.
The young generation of American ATP stars brought back the lost glory that the US once had. With 4 home players into the second week, they ensured the fans that the future of American tennis is in safe hands.
Stressing about the same, Brad Gilbert took to his Twitter and wrote, “can’t remember the last time we have 4 men into rd of 16 outside top 100 @usopen or any slam.”

Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, and Ben Shelton, are set to play their Round 4 matches. But only 3 have chances to make it to the quarter-final as two players set up an All-American clash. But this also means one American will definitely reach the quarter-final this year on the home turf.

A total of 8 players are about to continue their second-week journey, and the expectations are sky high. Though the outcomes of matches are yet to be known, given the All-American clashes, one between Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul and the other between Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula, New York is set to witness at least 2 Americans reigning on the home turf.
