My Mother Was Very Weary’ – Chris Evert’s Lesser-Known Ex-Husband’s Scary Confession on Their Short-Lived Marriage

Chris Evert, a tennis legend, had a rocky love life. Despite getting married three times after a failed engagement with Jimmy Connors, she was unable to find happiness in any of them. The 18-time Grand Slam champion wed British No 1 tennis Player John Lloyd in 1979, nearly 5 years after splitting from tennis legend Jimmy Connors. Recently, Lloyd made a startling admission that included Chris Evert and her mother during their courtship.

The amazing tennis players were together as a married couple for 8 years. In 1987, the couple filed for divorce and called off the marriage.

John Lloyd made a scary confession regarding Chris Evert

Chris Evert’s ex-husband and former tennis player, John Lloyd, earlier this year released his own autobiography. And on the ‘Rock n Roll Tennis’ podcast with Keith Fraser, he talked about his book and other aspects of his life. When the host of the podcast asked Lloyd whether his mother liked the 18-time Grand Slam champion when they started dating. The former British number 1 opened up about how her mother didn’t like Evert at the beginning of the relationship but eventually shared a great bond over the years.

He said, “She did, but it took a while only because she was intimidated. My dad took about five minutes because he was a huge tennis fan and he adored her and thought that she was the greatest ever. But my mother was kind of very weary, but she was always weary about anybody I went out with. She was always, very caught off, I don’t know if this is gonna work. She was right…” His dad, being a huge tennis fan, didn’t take much time to accept the relationship. However, her mother was kind of weary not only with the American tennis player but with any girl he has ever dated.

Further, he added, “Chris was great with her, Chris was very affectionate with her and she certainly won her over after a while. But getting ladies past my mother was not easy. I tried to avoid it as much as I could.” Nevertheless, the 18-time Grand Slam champion won over Lloyd’s mother with her affection.

Evert’s lesser-known first marriage 

The American tennis legend was at the peak of her tennis career when she married another tennis star, Lloyd. The British tennis player, in his book, has talked about his relationship in his autobiography released earlier this year. The former Great Britain Davis Cup captain believed that the 18-time Grand Slam champion was way out of her league. Also, he stated that she could have been more prepared before marrying her.

Nevertheless, the British number one believes that the main reason behind them falling apart was that they were quite young. And they were not able to spend time together. Both of them were on different circuits playing different Grand Slam events at that time.
