For some tennis players, the US Open can be a new hope as they close out the year’s tour. But for the unfortunate Paula Badosa, it’s the end of a season she never expected. After participating in the Australian Open and a couple of other events, the injury-riddled Spanish tennis player has pulled the plug on the rest of the 2023 season. Despite trying her best to recover, Badosa has also withdrawn her name from the US Open.

While her absence stunned the whole tennis world, some tennis fans were also ecstatic with this news. The formidable 25-year-old WTA star was all set to face Venus Williams in the first round of the tournament. But now that things have changed, Williams fans left no stone unturned to rejoice after her R1 opponent withdrew.

Venus Williams fans rejoice over Paula Badosa’s withdrawal

Recently, the former World Number Two tennis player disappointed fans and followers by announcing her sudden withdrawal from the last Grand Slam tournament of the year due to an injury. While the news has startled the tennis world, people do also hope to see her play on the tennis court without fears of injuries. On the other hand, fans of her R1 opponent, Venus Williams, just cannot get over the serendipity of the news. As the official Twitter page of the US Open shared this news with tennis fans, a lot of fans rejoiced about the withdrawal, leaving comments in support of the seven-time Grand Slam champion.

Some of the comments found hope for the 43-year-old tennis player’s fans as they desired their star to go further in the tournament. A true Williams fan came forward and shared her thoughts regarding how people had been making assumptions about Williams herself withdrawing. She wrote, “tbt to when people thought venus would be the one withdrawing, Paula is actually cursed tho.” 

Another fan bought into how people doubted the seven-time Grand Slam champion over her fitness. “Funny cause when the draw dropped all people were talking about is Venus being too unfit to play,” they added.

Noted tennis journalist Jose Morgado highlighted how 2023 has been an ill-fated run for the Spanish tennis player. He wrote, “Badosa also out, won’t play Venus in the night session on Tuesday. Williams awaits a Q or LL. It’s been a nightmare season for Paula.” 

Some fans shared sympathy for the 25-year-old tennis player and wrote, “Poor Paula, tbh better for Vee.”

But that’s not all. One of Venus’ fans was over the moon after knowing the withdrawal news. They wrote, “We will take it,” and shared a reaction GIF of a young Venus dancing happily on the court.

A fan shared his concern over the numerous withdrawals from the tournament and wished the best for Williams. He wrote, “How many withdrawals in a day? Good luck to her. Good luck to Venus.” 

On the other hand, a fan also mocked Badosa by speculating about what kind of injury she is facing. They tweeted, “Is the name of the injury Stefanos Tsitsipas?” – referring to her Greek boyfriend.

The 25-year-old tennis player has been lighting up the streets of New York with her boyfriend. And, a lot of fans didn’t hesitate to point fingers at Stefanos Tsitsipas, bringing up a new angle to the withdrawal.

Tennis fans blame Stefanos Tsitsipas for Badosa’s withdrawal 

In the same Twitter thread, some tennis fans also blamed the Greek tennis player for the injuries that his girlfriend has been facing since they got into a relationship. A fan pointed out how she has been ridden with bad luck, saying, “Every since she started livin with tsitsi she has been injured.”

But another fan also brought in a totally different angle to the story: “Mrs. Tsitsipas can’t catch a break. Sigh.”

While a lot of fans are quite happy with the 25-year-old tennis player’s withdrawal, it does mark the end of an unfortunate year. On the other hand, it will be great to see what lengths the 7-time Grand Slam champion can go to in the tournament. No matter the outcome, her loyal fans will remain happy simply seeing her compete in majors at her age.
