The French newspaper, L’Equipe, recently identified the 2022 season’s biggest disappointments on the ATP and WTA tours. The article included Naomi Osaka, Jannik Sinner, and Emma Raducanu as the players that should have done far better this year but let their supporters down with their performances on their respective tours.

However, tennis legend Chris Evert has a straight answer to the French newspaper calling out players’ injuries and difficult times as a disappointment. She took to social media to quote a tweet from Sport & Performance Psychologist Daria Abramowicz, who had previously worked with Iga Swiatek. The tweet called out the ranking system as disappointing.
The 18-time Grand Slam champion wrote, “Agree…. I have a pit in my stomach when I read negatively like this… Can we just move on???”

Along with Evert, the well-known Australian tennis coach, Rennae Stubbs, didn’t feel good about L’Equipe’s list. She also took to her social media account and replied to Abramowicz’s tweet, “Absolutely ridiculous!!!”
Nevertheless, the final question that might have come into the fans’ mind, is how these young tennis players who were thriving in 2021 came out to be a disappointment the next year.

What led Sinner and Raducanu to be tagged as ‘disappointing players’?
According to the publication, the 20-year-old British tennis star, along with Naomi Osaka, did not fare well on the Tour this year. The 2021 US Open champion this year battled a variety of injuries, and after winning her maiden Grand Slam championship and reaching her highest-career ranking of number 10. She dropped to the number 80 spot in the WTA rankings this year.

The Italian tennis player, who began the year in the top 10, was also highlighted in the newspaper. Despite his efforts, he was unable to win any titles. When he changed his coach this year, he also had to deal with some physical setbacks in order to adjust to the new adjustments. The 21-year-old won 4 titles back in 2021, but this year he only claimed one. Neither Chris Evert nor Rennae Stubbs are ready to accept this take.
