Maria Sakkari, the third-ranked player in the WTA rankings, received a marriage proposal from the audience during the exhibition doubles match she and Stefanos Tsitsipas played against Matteo Berrettini and Katarina Zavatska.

Days prior to the US Open, the year’s final Grand Slam, Tennis Plays for Peace included WTA players Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Maria Sakkari, Leylah Fernandez, Dayana Yastremska, Katarina Zavatska, and Daria Snigur alongside ATP players Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Matteo Berrettini, and Carlos Alcaraz.
Maria Sakkari gets a marriage proposal from the crowd
In New York, just prior to the US Open. Maria Sakkari took part in a wonderful charity event to support Ukraine. The local fans were so enthusiastic that the Greek winner even got a marriage proposal.

Maria was about to serve when she was halted by the audacious proposal. Maria politely retorted, “I have a boyfriend, sorry” Sakkari excused herself by citing that she already had a partner. Since 2020, Maria Sakkari has supposedly been dating Konstantinos Mitsotakis, the son of the Greek prime minister.
She describes Mitsotakis Jr. as an exceptional person and an easygoing individual. He is a helpful persona who has supported Sakkari in as many ways as he can, and he significantly influenced how well she performed in the game. Sakkari did very well at Roland Garros after being in a relationship with Mitsotakis Jr., and she believes he played a big part in it. Wherever they had a chance to be by themselves, they both spent time together.
Tsitsipas encourages Sakkari to serve sturdy
Stefanos Tsitsipas encouraged his doubles partner, Maria Sakkari, to serve so fiercely during the same exhibition match that their opponent Matteo Berrettini, could not return. Stefanos acknowledged that he would donate $10,000 to the Ukraine Catastrophe Support Fund if Sakkari succeeded.

Sakkari will compete in the US Open next. Maria’s most recent match was on August 16th, when she fell to world no.17 Caroline Garcia in the second round at Cincinnati, 7-6 (2) 6-7 (6) 6-1. (draw). The Greek now has a professional win-loss record of 28-17 for the year.

The most notable accomplishment for Maria Sakkari this season was making the finals in St. Petersburg and Indian Wells. Sakkari will compete in the U.S. Open next. On August 29, she will begin the competition from the main draw.
