What role did Martina Navratilova play in Mirka and Roger Federer’s love story?

In the book, The Roger Federer Story: Quest For Perfection, there is an instant where the writer goes back to 1987 when the 59-time Grand Slam champion was in Germany where she was greeted by Mirka’s family. After meeting the 9-year-old Mirka, Navratilova asked her if she has ever tried her hands on tennis. And to this, Federer’s now-wife replied, “I do ballet.”

Subsequently, the 8-time Wimbledon champion, at that time, advised her to try tennis looking at her good physic and athletic talent. The former world number one also asked a former top Czech player, Jiri Granat, to look at Mirka.

Notably, the Czech–American tennis player’s instincts were correct. After a few years of training, Federer’s wife was completely into the sport. Back in 1994, after winning the Swiss junior title. She said, “Tennis is my life, but it certainly can’t be easy to work with me because I can be really stubborn.” And by the time she was 17, she was already ranked among the top 300 tennis players in the world.

Mirka’s first impression of the ‘Swiss Maestro’

It is a well-known fact that she would have never met her now husband, the Swiss Maestro, if she never tried tennis in the first place. Although they’re the ideal couple in the sport of tennis, her first impression of the 20-time Grand Slam champion was drastically different. The 44-year-old player initially thought the Swiss Maestro had rough behavior.

The Swiss Maestro once recalled his wife’s reaction about what she thought after seeing Federer for the first time. He said, “Mirka had a similar situation, where she only play Club Tennis and she’s still like well this guy what he’s apparently new Superstar tennis player here in Switzerland. I don’t think so. He’s behaving too bad for that but I have a lot of those moments where people yeah saw me play. I was a rough diamond.”
