Together with her new coaching team, the 2023rd French Open quarterfinalist has shown her amazing tennis talents after a disappointing Wimbledon campaign a few months ago. Recently, after winning the first round at the US Open, she highlighted how things have changed for her in a better way.
Gauff was questioned during the post-match press conference about whether she has been using her 62-year-old coach’s popular philosophy of ‘winning ugly,’ about which he has also written a book.
She said, “I think I was trying my best to just stay in the points, try to push her on defense. She was coming to the net a lot. I lost to her in doubles at Wimbledon, so I knew she had good hands. She proved that she did. I think she only missed two or three volleys. So, yeah, today was truly winning ugly.”
Moreover, she believed that her match was somewhat inspired by the winning ugly philosophy, as her partnership with Agassi’s former coach has yielded a remarkable run of success. She also highlighted how the match was just a weird combination of different things coming together.
Well, this is not the first time she has talked about how things have changed since this summer. Earlier, after defeating the world number one, Iga Swiatek, for the first time, she shared her take on working with Brad Gilbert.
