Former American tennis star Serena Williams has worked with different coaches over her 27-year-long career. She started learning the basics from her father. Later, she got into Rick Macci’s academy in her early days as a tennis player. There’s one more important name who shaped her as a player. It’s the name of French tennis coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

A popular coach who has worked with many star players, Mouratoglou got great results with Serena as well. However, many in the tennis community believe that Serena could have achieved it without the Frenchman’s help. One such player who believed Serena needed next to no help from Mouratoglou was Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus. Here’s what he said.

Serena Williams had a great tenure with the French tennis coach. Her 10 out of 23 Grand Slam titles came under the guidance of Mouratoglou. However, former tennis player from Cyprus Marcos Baghdatis believed it was all the hard work of Serena and Mouratoglou had little to do with it. As per USA Today, back in 2013, Baghdatis said, “I don’t think it changed too much in her game. I think she’s a great player, and he’s lucky to be there.”

Baghdatis also was a former student of Mouratoglou. However, things didn’t work out well between them and he broke the ties soon.

While the reason for their split is still unclear, the Frenchman made a massive comment about the 41-year-old. Speaking about Serena’s retirement decision, the French tennis coach said that he would have liked Serena to continue, as she is an exceptional player.

However, speaking of Serena’s recent failures, Mouratoglou pointed out her diverse interests, including her business ventures, which, according to him, was the reason for her failing focus on tennis.
