The 26-year-old tennis player made sure that the Swiss flag flew high at the Tokyo Olympics. She had an absolutely breathtaking run in the Olympics, where she grabbed the gold medal in the women’s singles event and a silver medal in the doubles event with Viktorija Golubic. But having someone by your side who can understand the nerve-wracking matches is pivotal in such high pressure moments. Bencic had that in the form of none other than the 20-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer.

Federer was constantly in touch with her during the Olympic run. Now, after 2 years of the iconic event, the Polish commentator, Maciej Synówka, in an exclusive interview with Przeglad Sportowy, praised the Swiss legend as the “Grandmaster” while revealing recalled how he supported his compatriots during the Olympics.
Talking about Bencic’s connection with Federer, he said, “A bit like that, but there is a curiosity here – since 2016, when she was still a teenager, she has been in constant contact with Roger Federer. The Grandmaster took her under his wing and said, among others. That all Grand Slam triumphs taken together are less important to him than an Olympic medal. I think it was Roger who made her think that it is worth fighting for something for the country in the first place.”

Considering the immense support provided by the Swiss Maestro, it wasn’t a surprise when she dedicated her victory and her Olympic run to her mentor.
Bencic on having Federer’s support as a mentor
In a post-Tokyo Olympics interview with the ITF, Bencic spoke about having Federer as her biggest supporter. She acknowledged that having the 20-time Grand Slam winner by her side made her feel at ease. Not only that, but she also shares a great bond with the tennis legend.
