Rafael Nadal has always empowered the court! The 22-time Grand Slam champion is someone who has always called for equal opportunities and equal pay for women, but now, to explain the equal pay theory, he recently brought up a Serena Williams example.

Along with supporting equal pay, Nadal also shared his views on why women should earn a little more than men. Let’s take a look at what the 37-year-old Spaniard putting a perfect example with his and Williams’ names to clear up the idea behind equal pay.

Rafael Nadal, a well-known personality in the tennis community, fervently defended the idea of equal opportunity and compensation for women in the sport in a recent interview with Marca. The 37-year-old skillfully underlined the need to create a balanced future where male and female tennis players advance together, enhancing the sport with their combined talents and dedication, drawing upon the example of Serena Williams.

He stated, “Equality is that if Serena Williams generates more, that I will have to earn more than me. I don’t want to earn more than Serena for being Rafa Nadal. I want women who generate more than men, to earn more than men. In tennis, for some reason, the prizes they are practically equal. At the time, women’s tennis was widely watched and that is why equality came earlier.” 

In addition, he emphasized how women’s tennis has grown in popularity over time, making tennis a pioneer in terms of equal prize money. Furthermore, he recognized the role that women have played in tennis and its ongoing development, which is consistent to increase women’s accomplishment in the sport and the demand for equal chances.

However, he noted that it will provide an opportunity, as evidenced by how tennis growth has recognized the worth and relevance of women’s contributions to the sport. Has Nadal’s take on equal pay changed with time? 

Back in 2019, during the Australian Open that year, an interview with an Italian magazine highlighted how the comparison between men and women shouldn’t even be made. He stated, “If they sell more tickets than what we sell tickets, they deserve to (win)more than us. That’s very easy to understand- it’s not about being male or women. Doesn’t matter. We are the same. If they sell more than us, they have to win more than us.” 

Subsequently, even Roger Federer shared his take, on how he feels great to see women get equal pay for what they are doing in the tennis arena. However, the 37-year-old Spaniard focused on how equal pay is a relevant topic as women are doing just as well as men on the tennis court.
