All eyes were on Serena Williams at the 2024 Miami Open, where she made a stunning appearance on Day 11 at Hard Rock Stadium. From frequently practicing with Dimitrov to not wanting to stay ‘in the same country as the guy,’ the former World No. 1 has quite a story with the Bulgarian tennis player.

Maria Sharapova and the younger Williams sister were locked in a nasty feud when they were in their prime. The two did not enjoy each other’s company and it was visible in the way they fought against each other. Their relationship mellowed out as both retired and increased their involvement in other ventures. The bouts between the two had a tension thick enough that could be cut with a knife, and their tennis rivalry was not the only reason for it.
Their comments about each other off the court would go on to create bad blood. Dimitrov was also one of the reasons they never saw each other fondly. The Bulgarian player was rumored to be the ex-boyfriend of the 23-time grand slam champion before she met her husband, Alexis Ohanian. Dimitrov would also go on to date Masha from 2012-2015.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Williams appeared to discuss Sharapova dating Dimitrov, albeit she never named Sharapova outright. “She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky’ – it’s so boring,” says Serena in a loud voice. “She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it.”
The snide remarks became one of the reasons the dating rumors gained traction. Before the feud became about who the two stars were dating, fans noticed something peculiar, which led them to put the rumors on fire.

Williams’ suspicious comments after the 2013 French Open
The dating rumors of the two stars started catching fire in 2012 and it spread into 2013 as well. Their bond seemed to be getting stronger by the day as Williams and Dimitrov practiced together for the majority of the tournaments, which initially sent fans into a frenzy. However, it seemed as though the two had split after the 2013 Roland Garros.
The Queen of the Court would have a long stay in Paris after the tournament. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Williams stated, “I lost in the first round in the French Open last year, and I just decided to stay.” She further said, “No, I had a bad breakup, and I just didn’t want to be in the same country as the guy.”
