What is a Grand Slam without a bit of controversy? On numerous occasions, Wimbledon Championships paved the way for many disagreements and displeased players and fans alike. This year, it is the poster that stirred the world and it is not the first time for a poster to create controversy. Wimbledon once promoted ‘powerful posters’ in an exhibition that featured a model Simona Butler who was 18 years old in 1976. The image created sensation back then and the poster is called, ‘Tennis Girl’ which infuriated the world so much that the committee had to apologize publicly. The world has witnessed some bizarre and even meaningful contentions ranging from outbursts, sexist comments, of course, posters.

The poster did not go well with the majority of the world, leading to a social media eruption. When a fan called out the poster for gender discrimination, Martina Navratilova took her turn to reveal her view.

A fan couldn’t even recognize Jannik Sinner on the front and, upon knowing, commented, “Ahhhhh, that?s who. Still doesn?t justify all the women at the back. Absolutely atrocious.” Responding to this Tweet, Martina Navratilova commented, “Yup.” The poster featured Carlos Alcaraz and Sinner at the front, ‘The Big 3’ behind them.

How right is it to push Women, mainly the legends, who define the game in the background? Fans were not even able to identify some of them, owing to the poor clarity and image size. The pay disparity is not even completely settled, and this poster only added fuel to the discrimination against women.

While Wimbledon addressed that it is focusing on present-generation players, setting legends who hold records and glory in Grass Slam into mere background images made people furious. Even worse, some title holders were not even featured.

Does highlighting young players mean ignoring legends?

The poster of the ancient Slam pushed women to the background while focusing on men who did not even win one Grass Slam title. A fan on Twitter wrote, “Wimbledon stars, past and present. Women, train harder! The wonderful Martina Navratilova @martina is the player with the highest number of singles titles. She should be front and center and GOAT.”

Navratilova holds the record of winning more Grass Slam titles to date, in both men and women. Even Steffi Graff, Serena Williams, and Venus Williams were also overshadowed by the ATP players. Though the poster was said to be shedding light on young players, only two featured in it, and the rest of the players were either retired or in the later stages of their careers.

Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal share two Wimbledon titles each, but the former was ignored from the poster. Many young players like Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev, and even Holger Rune were nowhere to be seen. So what is the poster about? Present generation? Legends? Ignoring women? While the world speculates, only Wimbledon can answer these questions.
