Can Coco Gauff, Djokovic, and Alcaraz keep up their momentum and deliver the epic matches we crave?

After 3 Grand Slam and the Paris Olympics, tennis fans are bracing themselves for the year’s last major! It would be quiet sometime before the top players gather again. However, they have a few more expectations lined up at the US Open. They want to see the best battling on the hard court from the get-go. Maybe anticipating a terrific match-up for their favorites: Coco Gauff, Novak Djokovic, and Carlos Alcaraz. So that the fireworks light the moment they step on the court. However, something is missing in the air!

What is lacking according to some fans? The fireworks in the initial rounds. Despite the top seeds taking on the court and cruising through their initial rounds, fans expected more challenges in their way. Other than the exception of the Daniel Evans and Karen Khachanov match, which delighted fans with 5 hours and 35 minutes of action, the other challenges have been rather bland for their taste.

Coco Gauff made short work of her R1 and R2 opponents, as she successfully began her defense. So did the Spaniard, Alcaraz. While Djokovic faced some resistance in the R2 due to humidity and some issues with fitness, his physiotherapist was called to the court. However, all worked out well in the end, as Laslo Djere retired mid-match in the fourth set due to injury. No one to challenge the top players, and no upsets. And this tennis fan to X to share his disappointment with the first week of the US Open. He said:

Following this tweet on the social media platform, hoards of tennis fans came out to share their views about the first 3 days of the tournament. While some detailing the reason for ‘underwhelming’ initial days, others sharing some fun moments!

Does long season and exhaustion marks the ‘underwhelming’ initial days at the US Open for tennis fans?

As this fan puts things in his words: “Nothing on Ashe or Armstrong has gone stupid late yet, and there haven’t been many big upsets other than Sakkari and Tsitsipas (which is expected at this point 😂) so all of the highest seeds are still in.” Another tennis fan echoed the same view, as they highlighted the smooth journey of the top players as they make their way on the road to the finals.

Can Coco Gauff, Djokovic, and Alcaraz keep up their momentum and deliver the epic matches we crave?

Have an interesting take?

“I feel like a lot of the top seeds are absolutely cruising, which is unusual and there aren’t as many marquee matches as usual,”- said another tennis fan. Moreover, it’s not just players who are complaining of busy schedules throughout the tournaments. But the fans too, as too many matches together, make it impossible to enjoy every happening. The top players have largely dominated the main matches on the famous court.

As another tennis fan highlighted their plight in points, They said, “1.) All the Ashe matches have been blowouts so far. Nothing close yet. 2) It feels like all the women’s matches have been happening at the same time. You either have 10 at once or 2 at once.” Moreover, there could be another reason for the slow start: the Olympics! Usually, players would take a break after the grass swing to rejuvenate and get ready for the last Grand Slam of the season. But the Paris Olympics made things hectic for players and interesting for fans.

Maybe that’s the reason, after watching the Olympic final between the top players. They anticipated the US Open to start from where the Olympics ended. But it fell short. Why? “Because everyone is exhausted after this long session. With the Olympics added, we haven’t really had the break there usually is between Wimbledon and the US swing. So it all falls like a vicious circle?”– reasoned another fan However, not everything has been as quiet as it is thought to be.

Evans and Khachanov put a gritty show in the R2 itself. Giving tennis fans a trailer of what is about to come in the next rounds, as the best survives and clash for the title. Moreover, as this fan highlighted: “Raducanu, Ostapenko, and Collins out – not enough? 😉” There is certainly no end to the excitement anticipated during a good match! Maybe Gauff, Djokovic, and Alcaraz, among others, could make it happen to the world once again!
