It was a day of astonishing coincidences and emotional triumphs. Elina Svitolina and her husband Gael Monfils lit up the Australian Open today with back-to-back victories against two of the world’s top players. A few hours after Monfils upset ATP no. 4, Taylor Fritz, Elina Svitolina followed, defeating WTA No. 4 Jasmine Paolini on the same court- both after coming back from a set down. Was it just a coincidence or the power of love?

It’s not every day that a power couple achieves such a remarkable feat at the same tournament, let alone on the same court. Monfils got the ball rolling earlier in an intense afternoon session at Margaret Court Arena. His 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(1), 6-4 victory over Fritz marks the biggest win of his career at a Grand Slam event. Later in the evening, Elina Svitolina played on the same court. Despite a slow start, she stunned Paolini with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 comeback. It was not just another victory for Svitolina as she reached a milestone 40th career win against a Top 10 opponent and her first tournament since undergoing foot surgery after the US Open.

Reflecting on the win, the 28th-seed Elina Svitolina said, “It was a crazy battle today. Well, I would want to say that I got inspired after my husband’s win.” For the couple who have been married since 2021, victories like these are a testament to their mutual support.

When asked by the interviewer during a post-match on-court interview, if she had watched Monfils’ match earlier in the day, Svitolina’s face lit up with a smile. “I watched a little bit of that match, of course, it was tough to miss,” she admitted. Drawing inspiration from her husband’s performance, Svitolina came back after losing the first set against Paolini. She took control in the second set, breaking her opponent’s serve once, and then dominated the third set with precise shot-making and unwavering focus. “I had to really push through and [I’m] really happy with the way that I came back to the match. I was just trying to get one extra ball over the net and try to find my shot, so I am really happy with the performance in the end,” she said.

After such an incredible day of upsets and impromptu dances, both players now qualified for the round of 16, fans would be eagerly waiting to see what this dynamic duo can achieve next in the tournament.

The 38-year-old’s journey in the Australian Open has been remarkable until now. Starting with a five-set victory over compatriot Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard- 7-6, 6-3, 6(6)-7, 6(5)-7, 6-4, Monfils showed incredible endurance and skills. His second-round encounter with Daniel Altamaier was a straightforward win, as he cruised to a 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(3) victory, setting the stage for his epic encounter with Fritz.

The Frenchman not only won, he also put on a show for the fans at Margaret Court Arena. At 38 years of age, Monfils became the second oldest player after the legendary Roger Federer to reach the fourth round of the tournament. “I have a strong belief in myself, a strong belief that I can still do some damage, and I have a big trust in my team and obviously you know with a little bit of luck, here we are in the second week of the Australian Open,” the world No. 41 said confidently.
