Danielle Collins is currently wreaking havoc on the WTA Tour. The American player had only won a WTA 250 and 500 title before 2024 but suddenly, she’s on fire. Collins will retire at the end of 2024 but is having one last mind-blowing run, having won the Miami Open and the Charleston Open back-to-back. Now, she will look forward to the Madrid Open, which like the rest of us, Andy Roddick will be watching with relish.
Amidst her dream run, tennis pundits are finding themselves heavily surprised. Andy Roddick and Paul Annacone recently sat down with Mark Petchey and the Tennis Channel to discuss what her next move should be.

Winning two tournaments back-to-back is not an easy task, but Collins managed it, in her final year no less. The tennis world is surprised at her sudden ability and is wondering what she will do next. As per Roddick, her transition from the hard court to clay was impressive, and she should be looking to maximize her potential. “It’s really impressive stuff going from the hard to the clay. I always say you can’t choose when you play well, and I think you have to maximize.“
The former number 1 also touched up on her schedule. “The question going forward would be what’s her schedule going to look like; how big of a rush uh is she in to get over to Europe and see if she can continue this momentum.” As of now, Collins hasn’t declared whether she will play in the Madrid Open or not. However, there is a good chance we will see her there.
When asked what he would tell Collins to do next, Paul Annacone believes it should have to do with not interrupting her at the moment. “I would say very little. I would say just keep going having fun you know.” However, he did outline why she might be performing better than ever in 2024.

“Freed herself up”: Paul Annacone on why Collins is playing better
Annacone said that one of the most difficult things for a player to do is to set a time when they are playing well. He also believes that, at this moment, most of her career is about the mind leading the body instead of her feeling frustrated in her own figure.
“I think she’s freed herself up by saying she doesn’t want to play after this year. We’ve talked about with her the health and well-being reasons why she’s not going to play. It’s not because she’s frustrated with what’s happening. It’s for health and well-being, and so that being the case, she’s kind of released a little bit of a pressure valve so she can go out and have fun.”
