JuJu Watkins outshines Caitlin Clark—Is she the new face of women's basketball?

JuJu Watkins is going to Hollywood! The USC Trojan star, who won Freshman of the Year last season, has been steadily on the path to stardom on the college basketball scene. The 19-year-old will now feature those skills on the silver screen and also work behind the scenes with none other than LeBron James in a reported new project. In an exciting start to her sophomore year, she has repeated freshman year history and once again left behind Caitlin Clark in the dust!

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Watkins will not only star in but also executive produce an upcoming documentary series for NBC and Peacock, owned by $170 billion worth Comcast. On the Rise: JuJu Watkins, from Klutch Sports, Uninterrupted and 4.4.Forty, is set to premiere its first two episodes on Saturday. Nov. 23. at 3 p.m. on NBC. It will air just before the USC vs. Notre Dame game, whereas episodes three through six will be available to stream exclusively on NBC Universal’s Peacock.

Uninterrupted, co-founded by LeBron James and Maverick Carter, will feature Watkins in a documentary which she says is meant to, “give people more insight into who I am, my values and my story, because I take so much pride in it.” Having stated before that she’s an introvert, it will be a huge jump for the Trojans guard to go from a talented athlete in the NCAA to a popular TV star.

“I’m an introvert, so I don’t really share that much online, honestly,” Watkins told The Hollywood Reporter. “I think to just give people more perspective into who I am, and my family, my friends, I think that’s also an important dynamic. And like I said, I’m introverted, so this is kind of my way of sharing myself a little bit with everyone else.”

It’s a huge achievement when looking at the most famous face in women’s basketball currently. Despite the revolution she’s wrought in the sport overall, even Caitlin Clark has never had a documentary solely focused on her. One achievement to bear in mind is also that JuJu Watkins broke the NCAA rookie scoring record, previously set by CC (799), with 920 points last season. Talk about a new generation of superstars!

The reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year, meanwhile, shared the screen with some of her talented 2024 Draft Class on ESPN in the summer. What if it had been her own film? One Uninterrupted executive imagines.

Have an interesting take?

Unlike JuJu Watkins, Caitlin Clark didn’t receive the film star treatment in Iowa

Perhaps that statement is not 100% correct. Caitlin Clark’s wide fanbase would certainly disagree, who even likes to watch her play a different sport? A horde of fans made a three-hour trip to watch their favorite player at the John Deere Pro-Am last year and have successfully coerced the LPGA to stream her 7 AM game at The ANNIKA tomorrow. What if she had a film made on her?

While it’s not the penultimate achievement an athlete can have, it certainly adds to their status. Uninterrupted Jamal Henderson said to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Olympics probably do this the best, right? You get these amazing, heartwarming packages, and now the stakes are so high when you’re watching that bobsledder. Now imagine if Caitlin [Clark] had this before when we were watching those Iowa games. I think this is the new, innovative model in storytelling, and that’s why we’re really excited to be a part of it.”

CC’s rookie season in the W had been featured in the ESPN+ Original Series, “Full Court Press.” It had also starred South Carolina center Kamilla Cardoso and UCLA guard Kiki Rice. No. 22 certainly deserved to be called a sensation but JuJu Watkins beat her to the documentary game!
