Why does A'ja Wilson favor OKC's culture over Miami Heat despite her ties with Bam Adebayo?

“And she won gold in women’s basketball. I guess that has to do something with Bam and the Heat, huh? Being here today,” the mayor of Miami stated during the event of presenting the Key of the Miami-Dade County to Bam Adebayo sparking a fire that the two basketball stars were keeping under wraps. Since the Paris Olympics, rumors of A’ja Wilson dating Adebayo have made rounds on the internet. Therefore, one would expect Wilson to name the Miami Heat as her favorite NBA team. However, the 3x WNBA MVP feels a $3.65 billion worth franchise’s culture is close to the Las Vegas Aces.

On Friday’s episode of the Roommates Show, Wilson shared the team whose culture she feels is close to the 2x WNBA Championship winners- the Las Vegas Aces. “I would just say OKC. OKC seems like very Aces-like. They’re always constantly around each other, getting on each other’s nerves, yeah.” “Like interviews and stuff?,” asked the interviewer. “Yeah, I think that’s us,” Wilson remarked.

Though, the Oklahoma City Thunder have won only one Championship title, and that too in 1979, they recently brought home the conference championship title in 2024. The team consists of four main stars Gordon Hayward, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Another of their star Jaylin Williams previously expressed his closeness to his teammate Josh Giddey by revealing “Me and Gidd, we just give each other cr-p.”

Even during COVID when every team was navigating the bubble and going through a tough time, the NBA had published an article on how the Thunder stars “kept smiles on their faces, positive thoughts in their minds and gratitude in their hearts.”

According to balling experts, that was one of the moments that displayed their bond. And that has helped them stick together through thick and thin. Meanwhile, it wasn’t expected that Wilson would overlook the Heat.

The rumors of Wilson dating Adebayo started when the two were seen hanging out in Vegas while the USMBNT practiced in Sin City. The two were also caught in each other’s games in the Paris Summer Games. Even when Dwayne Wade’s statue was to be inaugurated at the Kaseya Center, Miami’s home arena, the rumored couple made it together.

Tagged as the power couple of basketball, the two tried to keep things under wraps, only to be found red-handed. Even Wilson’s teammate Syndey Colson had shared a snap of the mayor praising the reigning MVP while captioning it “If I send you this, just know I’m finna tell on you.” When Wilson toppled Jewell Loyd’s record of 939 points with her 956, Adebayo tweeted one word: “U’nanimous.”

Many felt as if he was either referring to Wilson’s status as a GOAT or predicting her to sweep the MVP award this season unanimously. Well whatever it was, the Aces star did get to her third MVP title unanimously, a feat that had been achieved by only Cynthia Cooper-Dyke in 1997.

But that doesn’t mean that the South Carolina alum is not showing her appreciation. Recently when Adebayo launched his own bourbon, Wilson was there to celebrate with him, joining him for dinner. The two were seen raising a toast and thus have put efforts to blossom their friendship/relationship if there is one.

Therefore, after having so many reasons to support the Heat, Wilson overlooking the franchise to applaud the Thunder culture seems confusing. But the 28-year-old showed that she keeps her personal biases away and for her, basketball comes above everything else.
