Tonight was quite a homecoming for Baltimore’s own Barbie, Angel Reese. Not only did she bag a win, but she swept away a rebounding record and did all this in front of the crowd who had seen her play since she was in middle school. Amongst them was one special person apart from her family members and that was LSU’s head coach, Kim Mulkey. However, the locked-in Bayou Barbie had more important things to do before meeting the former coach, something she learned in her two years as a Lady Tiger.

Talking to the reporters in her post-game press conference, Angel Reese shared her experience with Mulkey and how she understands the rookie. She said, “Oh no, I don’t look at the crowd. I don’t even speak to people before the game usually. I’m locked in and they know that. My family knows that. My coaches know that. Even if I was at LSU, Kim bet… I better not run over to nobody on the sideline. So, I’m just always focused.”

Reese also spoke about how her current team is her priority before the game. She said, “The main thing is the main thing and that’s just being with the team. I don’t want to take anything away from that because that’s what I’m here for. I’m here for business and this is my job. They understand that and they respect that. But after the game, obviously being able to go around and show love to everybody that came out.”

Tonight, she became the fifth WNBA rookie to put up three consecutive games with 5 offensive and defensive boards each. Surely, Kim Mulkey has given a relentless athlete to the WNBA world in Angel Reese. But despite being miles away, the two have stayed in connection.

A story of its own: Kim Mulkey and Angel Reese

The LSU alumnae had told the head coach that she would only be a Lady Tiger for two years. Despite the crunch, they brought in a National Championship within a year. Hence, there is clearly a lot between the two. Angel Reese described it as, “I’m a little special to her,” pointing out the fact that Mulkey does not make a lot of appearances in WNBA games. The 22-year-old forward and Mulkey have brought LSU their first National Championship back in 2023. Moreover, the head coach was also responsible for helping the Sky rookie get over LSU by building trust with Teresa Weatherspoon. Reese later added, “She loves me and supports me.”

Angel Reese also had a special message for the world and Mulkey. She said, I want people to realize like off the court, Kim Mulkey loves you. She’ll support you no matter what. She’s like a mother to me. She calls me still, checks in on me, making sure I’m good. Checks in on my family, calls my grandma. It’s like, it’s a relationship that a lot of people obviously fail to realize and don’t see. I love coach Mulkey and I love Kim Mulkey. Go Tigers!”
