Women’s sports are really taking a turn for the good. Whether you talk about Nelly Korda in golf or A’ja Wilson in basketball, every player is changing the narrative and the entire globe is paying close attention. So much so, that big guns of the sporting world like Patrick Mahomes are also talking about how important investing, in one way or the other, in this league is.
Sharing his thoughts during the Times 100 Gala, the Kansas City Chiefs star expressed, “There was this well-meaning but patronizing idea that you should care about the women’s sports because that aligns with your values. And sure, there’s some merit to that. But the real reason you should care about women’s sports is because they are incredible. Just Google A’ja Wilson’s highlights and you’ll see what I’m talking about.”
He added support to his claim, saying, “The talents, the narratives, the personalities, women’s sports has it all. And I think people are finally starting to figure that out. The women’s NCAA basketball championship was ESPN’s most-viewed college basketball game ever.”

Mahomes ended his speech by saying, “We all need to keep investing in the women’s game with our attention, our media, and our wallets. Because this isn’t a flash in the pan, it’s the future. So, here’s a toast to the greatness that is women’s sports. It’s been happening and I’m glad that the world is catching on.”
Mahomes and his wife Brittany are actively playing a role in this transformation. They co-own a stake in the NWSL’s Kansas City Current. The team recently transferred its home ground to the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Stadium, which is the only stadium in the world specifically for a women’s pro soccer team. Similarly, Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has also lifted women’s sports.

One of the best parts about being popular is having a stage. And the 2023 WNBA Finals MVP has proven that she can take this advantage and put her voice to great use to boost women’s sports. The Columbia, South Carolina native took special moments in her speech during both the Times 100 Summit and Gala to make people realize how women’s sports are not just entertainment but can be great investment options.
Sharing the stage with Olympic gold medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad and podcaster Pablo Torre, Wilson requested sports followers, “Buy that jersey. Go to that game, take someone else, put your money where your mouth is, and invest in these women.”

She also stated that currently, the WNBA and other women’s leagues have the most eyes on them. Hence, everyone should become a part of this movement. Moreover, she also believes that instead of complaining on social platforms to give equal pay to women athletes like men, fans should put their money where their mouth is, to be the change to make the change.
