As a former MVP and 15-time All-Star, Shaquille O’Neal certainly used his experience when he said, “We still got Diana Taurasi, we still got A’ja Wilson. If you’re gonna give (Caitlin) props, make sure our girls that are dominating in this league get the same props.” It only took one game for the LV Aces’ center, Wilson, to prove his words true.
Before entering Gainbridge Arena to face each other, both Caitlin Clark and A’ja Wilson had specific goals in mind. While Aces’ veteran Wilson aimed to claim the season’s scoring record, Fever’s rookie Clark was vying for a new regular-season assist record. But the 22-year-old Clark fell short by five assists in her pursuit of the record. However, this was not the case with A’ja Wilson.
Within 12 minutes of entering the game, Wilson, the league’s scoring leader, did what she does best. She racked up 12 impressive points in the first half against Fever’s tough defense. In doing so, she broke the previous scoring record held by Jewell Loyd. With her 941 points this season, she became the first player to achieve this feat in just a 35-game span in league history.

Despite her accomplishment, Wilson seemed to go unnoticed by the announcers, who were likely anticipating Clark’s record-breaking performance. They failed to acknowledge Wilson’s impressive achievement, but her gameplay was enough to rally her fans and several prominent names in the WNBA to give her the recognition she deserved.
WNBA steps forward for “Giving Wilson her flowers“
Alongside this historic triumph, Wilson also scored an impressive 27 points in the Las Vegas Aces’ 86-75 win against the Fever. “@_ajawilson22 IS HER!!! Congrats on breaking the single-season scoring record. Like you said about @kahleahcopper… You Dat B@!%^,” penned Sheryl Swoopes on X. Swoopes has always been vocal in applauding players’ triumphs, whether it’s Aliyah Boston, Kelsey Mitchell, or even A’ja Wilson over Clark.
To add even more excitement, Wilson’s collegiate coach, who helped her the most with dyslexia, chimed in. “Giving @_ajawilson22 her flowers for breaking the single-season scoring record…When the love comes from loved ones, it’s fulfilling enough!” she said in a statement, seemingly touching upon the ignorance.

From the Olympics to Gainbridge Arena, Staley never hesitates to appreciate Wilson, even for her smallest triumphs. But she’s not the only one thrilled with the 28-year-old’s success. “Congratulations to A’ja Wilson, the best player in the WNBA. Give A’ja her flowers,” shared the 13th player in history to record a 20-20 game. Even for Raquel, the two-time MVP stands out.

“THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER! What A’ja Wilson is doing this season is out of this world. Maybe that’s why people struggle to comprehend her greatness (well, other reasons too),” added TJ Keseal. From the start, the 3-time WNBA champion has been as dominant as ever. Even in her toughest game versus France in the Olympics, she delivered 21 impressive points. Her name will undoubtedly go down in history and acknowledgment, it demands.
“A’ja Wilson just broke the single-season scoring record… the broadcast failed to mention a single thing about it,” penned Chris Williamson. For him, the lack of recognition from the WNBA remains a sore point. While it might be an issue, nothing will change Wilson’s status as a scoring machine in the league’s history.
