Could a WNBA 'Offseason' show rival the excitement of Midge Purce's latest venture?

It wasn’t anything short of a dream come true when Gotham and USWNT star Midge Purce dropped the first episode of Offseason on Friday. As the craze for the soccer stars gripped the nation, there were demands to get a similar version for the WNBA players. The production was done in collaboration with Serena Williams’ husband Alexis Ohanian, who responded to one fan’s plea, divulging his plan on the given suggestion.

“I cannot comment on any conversations we may (or may not) be having but @100purcent is very bullish on the ladies of the W providing a LOT of offseason entertainment…,” Ohanian shared through X on Friday, tagging Midge Purce of Gotham City-FC in it.

The Offseason is a six-episode half-hour docu-series that takes the cameras behind the scenes, filmed in Miami, two weeks before the NWSL preseason. It recounts the storylines of female soccer stars and presents a relatively hidden side of female sports. The athletes in the series are seen gearing up for the upcoming season and competing with each other for starting and roster spots.

The rushes follow Purce, Kansas City’s Lo’eau LaBonta, Houston Dash’s Maria Sanchez, and the other 8 athletes as they battle injuries, take up new contracts, and experience the preseason pressure.  Purse first presented the concept to Ohanian, who has always promoted women’s sports and is determined to make them as valuable as men’s sports. And the 41-year-old motivated Purce to share her take on her world with a reality series. Therefore, with the demand for a WNBA series being raised, it is not a long shot that Ohanian might invest in the league as well.

Alexis Ohanian has previously expressed his interest in the WNBA

As of 2024, Ohanian’s net worth is estimated to be $150 million. He was the co-creator of Reddit and also held the position of Chairman in it. He has often come to the fore to popularize women’s sports, one of the most prominent examples being when he launched Athlos, which offers the biggest prize money in track and field to women athletes.

Therefore, if Ohanian supports, then the W could also have a series similar to Offseason FC. Previously, during the WNBA draft day, his wife Serena Williams had expressed her wish to own a W team. “I absolutely would be. I think that with the right market, I think I would definitely be super interested in that… More people watched women’s basketball in college than the men,” Williams had opined.

The tennis icon must have taken note of the fact that NCAA women’s basketball had 18.9 million viewers whereas men’s basketball had 14.8 million. All this points to the fact that women’s basketball is on and upwards and hopefully will attract as much attention as the NBA in the coming years.

Additionally, Ohanian has been quite a supporter of women’s basketball as well, hyping up Caitlin Clark and other stars on their achievements. This only adds to the fact that he just might get on board with the league. If not an investment, hopefully, he will soon come to the fore to announce making another series.
