Is the WNBA too rough on Caitlin Clark, or is this just part of the game?

“The people I’m going to be playing in this league are full-grown, very strong women. You’re going to get hit. You’re going to get bumped,” Caitlin Clark said when asked about the most difficult aspect of the WNBA. Since her admission to the league, many opponents have tried to physically dominate her in an attempt to put pressure on her game. While Clark has emerged as one of the best rookies this season, there is no denying that despite, Clark handling every situation calmly, the physicality has surely affected her game. However, legendary basketball player Cheryl Miller has a different solution to Clark’s woes.

Miller was present on the Come And Talk 2 Me podcast with Mark Jackson on Tuesday when she was asked how she would have handled the physicality if she was Clark. A bold Miller reflected on the aggressive side of her game and gave her take on the path that she would have adopted. And fans were ecstatic to hear her. “Cheryl back in the day? That Cheryl back in the day? Oh, my gosh. It, it and see again the Cheryl back in the day grew up with brothers. So, I didn’t fight like this. I was like an all in. And I wasn’t, and I wasn’t the type you know to get a running start at somebody,” Miller stated.

“I would, I would have composed myself, and then every like, well, did she throw a punch? And then the person beneath and I’m walking away. It only all so… I… I would have… I would have handled my business. I would have handled my business. I, you know, either during that moment which I would have caught I would have been caught up in the moment and but I’m, I’m, I’m glad at what how Caitlin handled the situation,” Miller added via Come And Talk 2 Me podcast.

Raised by Saul and Carrie Miller, Cheryl has three siblings- two brothers and a sister. From a young age, Saul and Carrie inculcated a competitive spirit in their kids such that all of them went ahead to play a sport either professionally or in college. While Cheryl was known for her balling skills, her brother Reggie Miller was an NBA legend. He played with the Indiana Pacers and also bagged a gold with Team USA in the Olympics. Thus, Cheryl would have definitely seen the physical side of the game considering the NBA is more physical than the W. However, that does not mean the physicality against Clark in the league can be ignored.

Clark, since her admission in the league, has been caught off guard a number of times. One incident that also caught a lot of attention was when the Chicago Sky’s Chennedy Carter during a game against the Indiana Fever in June after scoring a layup nudged Clark who fell to the ground. This had earned Carter a lot of haters. Then on Saturday, Diamond DeShields had pushed Clark which earned her a foul when the latter was on a fast break as she fell to the ground once again. All this points to Clark’s problems with physicality which were also highlighted by the University of Connecticut Huskies coach Geno Auriemma.

Geno Auriemma talks about Caitlin Clark’s problems

During an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show in June, Auriemma had opined that Clark is “not built for the physicality of this league,” and isn’t also quick enough to “get away from the physicality.” Nonetheless, the Huskies head coach had applauded Clark for “handling it great.” As per Auriemma, all Clarks needed at that time was to get more experience under her belt that would help her develop her plan of dealing with physicality.

What’s your perspective on:

Is the WNBA too rough on Caitlin Clark, or is this just part of the game?

Have an interesting take?

“When she gets it, she has elite skills that are going to help her,” Auriemma had concluded, as per Newsweek. From her recent outings, it is clear that Clark hasn’t yet found the solution to her problem. But, what needs to be applauded is her dominance in the W which can propel the Fever to the playoffs.

And now that Miller has come forward to share her take on the issue, hopefully, Clark might look at it from another perspective, bulk up a little, and play an aggressive brand of basketball. Whatever Clark does, surely it’s gonna get people excited.
