In a historic moment for the NFL, Nike will air its first ad since 1998 during this Sunday’s Super Bowl. The footwear apparel company is looking to capitalize on a largely untapped, but rapidly growing market, of women’s sports in America. Nike’s advertisement is set to be about 90 seconds long, thrice the length of the average Super Bowl ad. Having a completely women athlete centric Super Bowl ad is a huge step in the right direction!
Not to mention, favorite WNBA stars will be taking center stage in this commercial. Reigning MVP A’ja Wilson, ROTY Caitlin Clark, and WNBA champion Sabrina Ionescu are all set to be part of this legendary ad campaign. The cultural impact of having the three biggest names in the WNBA on one ad is going to be huge! They’ll be in great company, too, alongside elite athletes like sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson and gymnast Jordan Chiles.
The Nike ad has a powerful message behind it: defiance and resilience. “So Win” is going to be the first Super Bowl ad that Nike has put out since 1998’s “Swoosh This.” It features athlete-focused story-telling, with women being encouraged to break the limitations imposed upon them by society. Think of how Sabrina Ionescu was told that she should be playing with dolls in middle school. Think of the resilience she showed by recruiting and creating her own basketball team!

There are millions of stories about women struggling, and facing horrible odds. They don’t give up, they keep fighting, they keep defying expectations. That’s the story Nike wants to tell. Grammy award winner Doechii has narrated the commercial which is all set to air on Sunday.
The black-and-white commercial, set to the tune of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” focuses on the struggles and triumphs of these athletes. The ups and downs, and the bumps on the road. “Whatever you do, you can’t win. So Win.”
All three WNBA stars have stories that inspire thousands. From Caitlin Clark’s rise to success, to Wilson’s unanimous MVP season, and Ionescu’s three-point record. They have all faced adversity without fear, that’s why they are the best.
“So Win” a big triumph for Caitlin Clark, A’ja Wilson and women’s sports
What does this commercial mean for women’s sports in America? What does it mean for the WNBA? Even though women’s sports is currently undergoing a meteoric rise, the attention that this ad will bring is nothing to scoff at. It is the first time that a Super Bowl advertisement will focus on women athletes and their achievements. Though Nike is doing it in order to revive their brand value and sales after recent issues, it still holds a lot of meaning.

Caitlin Clark, however, has revolutionized the women’s sport. Her competitive fire and well-developed skill set made her an immediate hit during her college years. That same willingness to compete is serving her well in her professional career so far. To feature in a Super Bowl ad at such a young age is massive for the Indiana Fever star.
On the other hand, A’ja Wilson is coming off a career year. The WNBA MVP, and former 2x DPOY has a stacked resume really early. At 28, she has earned accolades that people can only dream about! Her hard work is an inspiration to all that plan on following her footsteps.

This commercial showcases the might of the female athlete in front of the Super Bowl’s 124 million viewership base. If Nike manages to executive their vision perfectly, their sales and engagement would increase ten-fold. Similarly, the WNBA will only go up from here.
