Are WNBA ticket prices justified, or are they alienating the true fans of the game?

The Championship Finale series between the New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx has been quite competitive. While the Liberty won Game 2 and Game 3, the Lynx leveled the series by emerging victorious in Game 1 and 4. Hence, Sunday’s Championship Finale is expected to be a nail-biter that will decide the ultimate winner of the league for the season. With the night expected to be full of celebrities and stars gracing the Barclays Arena, there is one more thing that has made entering the gates for the final showdown extremely difficult for the common man.

According to the WNBA writer Myles Ehrlich, the get-in prices will be $200+ for a seat with the unprecedented demand facing the W. Ehrlich posted a screenshot of the ticket prices of various sites. The costliest of them is priced at $2,819, which certainly exceeds the cost of Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart’s All-Star checks. For the 2020 WNBA All-Star selections, the two Liberty stars earned $2,575. An amount that definitely stands low when compared to the highest-priced ticket for Game 5 of the Championship Finale.

The tickets for the WNBA Finale are available at SeatGeek, StubHub, Ticketmaster, and Vivid Seats. If the fans want to book their seats, they should hurry for the high-demand tickets. What adds to the game is that this will be the first time since 2019 that the league will be going till Game 5 to decide the winner. And with the Lynx and the Liberty equally matched, fans are keen on witnessing the historic night.

While the Lynx are going for their fifth title, hoping to tie their record for the most title wins with Houston Comets and Seattle Storm, the Liberty is the only original franchise to not have bagged a title all these years. Moreover, this is New York’s only second appearance after last year’s finals before which they had a drought of at least two decades since their chance at the World Championship trophy in 2002.

Another tally that makes the betting ambiguous is that New York has lost only one regular season series this year and that was at the hands of Minnesota with a 2-1 tally. But what stands in their favor is that they will be battling against the Lynx at home and will certainly get much support.

Both Ionescu and Stewart were part of Team USA for the Olympics. Playing against a jam-packed 16,407 people in Arizona, Stewie in particular performed exceptionally well. She scored 31 points with 10 rebounds and ended as the highest scorer for her team. Though Team USA lost to Team WNBA by a 117-109 margin, the game will forever be etched in memories for Stewie’s performance.

Previously, Caitlin Clark had jokingly mentioned how the prices of the tickets were too costly for her to invite her own family to the games. Then, the Indiana Fever went against the Chicago Sky for one final time. The stubs, priced at an average of $884 were ten times the rest of the regular season games for the Sky, making it one of the most expensive tickets in the WNBA’s history.

Hopefully, in the next season, the WNBA will tackle this ticket price inflation to keep the fans interested in the league. Meanwhile, fans should rush to the sites, if they want to have a chance at witnessing probably one of the closest WNBA Championship Finale thrillers.
