Will Chennedy Carter's overseas success push Chicago Sky to secure her for another season?

“That’s the Chenn to the Barbie.” Angel Reese had developed a good friendship with Chennedy Carter in her rookie year at Chicago Sky. She hasn’t shied away from publicly accepting it by referring to the “Ken-Barbie” context. Nevertheless, the Sky has undergone a significant overhaul.  This includes the addition of Tyler Marsh as head coach. Meanwhile, Carter’s future with the team remains uncertain as she holds restricted free-agent status. For now, Carter seems unfazed by the ambiguity surrounding her WNBA career. Instead, she’s fully immersed in her off-season stint in China.

Carter had a stellar season with the Chicago Sky, leading the team in scoring. However, her campaign ended on a bittersweet note when an untimely absence due to injuries from key games contributed to Chicago’s playoff elimination. Not one to dwell on setbacks, Carter quickly shifted focus post-season. She announced her decision to take her talents overseas, signing with WCBA side Wuhan Shengfan.

Now, a video probably from her drill session in China has surfaced. It displays her making the most of the opportunity to refine her skills and stay competitive. The WNBA Central posted it on X. They wrote, “Chennedy Carter reminding people why she’s one of the best shooting guards in the league right now. 🔥”

The video showcases Carter dominating the court, dribbling past a male opponent with crossovers before muscling through the paint for a smooth jump shot. And as if that wasn’t enough, she followed it up with a flawless three-pointer from beyond the arc. Just a few days back, Carter had also given fans a glimpse of her game-day brilliance, sharing a WCBA highlight on her story where she showcased her ball-handling finesse before sinking a confident mid-range bucket.

In September, Chennedy Carter inked a deal with Shengfan, marking her return to familiar territory. The 25-year-old is no stranger to the Chinese basketball scene, having played for the Heilongjiang Dragons in 2023.

For Chennedy Carter, the offseason isn’t just about staying fit—it’s about proving a point. With Chicago Sky’s new head coach outlining a clear vision and heightened expectations for next season, the stakes are higher than ever. Yet, Carter’s future with the Windy City franchise hangs in the balance.

Chennedy Carter’s uncertain future: Will she reunite with Angel Reese?

In just four seasons, Chennedy Carter’s career has already seen its share of twists and turns. The Atlanta Dream drafted her in 2020, and she posted solid performances in her first two seasons before the Los Angeles Sparks traded for her in 2022. However, her time with the Sparks proved less fruitful—she started only two of the 24 games she played. The challenges culminated in March 2023, when the Sparks waived Carter. Reports, including one from the Los Angeles Times, cited “poor conduct” as a factor behind her benching during the season.

While Carter chose to stay away from the pro platform for the 2023 season, she got a second chance when the Chicago Sky came calling. Under the leadership of head coach Teresa Weatherspoon, Carter didn’t just join the roster—she thrived. Averaging a career-high 17.5 points per game, she used the opportunity to remind everyone of her immense talent. Now a restricted free agent, Carter’s future hangs in the balance. While the Sky have the right to match any offers she receives, her next move remains uncertain.

“Leaving Chicago today 🩵✈️ it’s bittersweet,” Carter posted on Threads before she left for China to join the Wuhan Shengfan (WCBA).  Carter’s “bittersweet” message could signify multiple things. The end of her tenure with the Chicago Sky or frustration over a foot injury that sidelined her for four games. Or the sting of missing the playoffs.

While Chennedy Carter hasn’t fully committed to staying with the Chicago Sky, her exit interview left the door wide open for a reunion. “My main goal is always just to be somewhere I’m wanted. I love being here. I enjoyed the season. It was fun. It was special. If Chicago wants me back, I’m interested in coming back.” According to GM Nadia Pagliocca’s remarks, there’s reason to believe Chicago is keen on bringing her back for another season. For now, fans can only hope the mutual interest turns into a concrete deal.
