Who would’ve thought the German women’s basketball team, fresh off the plane for their Olympic debut, would be turning heads? It’s been a star-studded performance from the whole team, with everyone stepping up their game. One player who might not be grabbing all the headlines is Marie Gulich. You might remember her from her time with the Phoenix Mercury. While she’s not leading the scoreboard, Gulich has been a force on the boards, hauling in a solid 17 rebounds in just two games.

Well, let’s talk about the woman behind the player and dive deep into Marie Gulich’s personal life. And what’s a better way to start than exploring the better half of the German hooper? Jonathan Halx is the mystery man who captured the heart of this basketball star. Gulich has often posted cute pictures with Halx on her Instagram account. Interestingly, just like the Mercury star, Halx is also an athlete.

Jonathan Halx is a soccer player who plays as a center-back, but he can also pull on the goalie gloves when needed. He has bounced around a few local German clubs, gaining experience at regional levels. Right now, he’s holding down a spot with Eimsbütteler TV, which isn’t exactly a household name in world football. They play in the sixth tier of German football, known as Landesliga Hamburg-Hammonia. That’s also the second-highest league in the state of Hamburg.

Halx has actually managed to find the back of the net a couple of times during his 19 matches with Eimsbütteler TV. Not bad for a defender. Before shifting his base to Eimsbütteler in July last year, Halx was honing his skills at Groß Flottbeker SV. He worked his way up through their youth ranks before joining the main team in 2016. But his soccer story started even earlier, as Halx started kicking the ball around back in 2005 itself, playing for Blau-Weiß 96 Schenefeld. It’s safe to say that soccer has been a constant in his life.

Well, now that we have discussed Gulich’s love life, let’s discuss the German hooper’s own career track.

Marie Gulich started making waves in college basketball for the Oregon State Beavers. That led to her big break: getting drafted 12th overall by the Phoenix Mercury. But her rookie season was a bit of a rollercoaster. She barely got any court time, averaging a measly 1.5 points a game.

Looking to shake things up, Gulich was traded to the Atlanta Dream. This move seemed to do the trick, as she started to find her feet. Improving her scoring and rebounding numbers, the center averaged 3.3 points along with 2.7 rebounds per game. But her WNBA journey didn’t stop there. She packed her bags again and headed to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Unfortunately, that was the last of her WNBA adventure, to date. During the three years of hopping around different teams, Gulich featured in 66 games and managed to add 165 points to his WNBA resume. The 30-year-old is currently a free agent, but she must be looking to put up a good show at the Olympics, to catch the eye of some WNBA scouts and secure a spot for next season.
