WNBA star Diana Taurasi is one of the greatest women basketball players to have ever played the sport. Drafted as the 1st overall pick by the Phoenix Mercury in 2004 Taurasi has since gone on to win 3 WNBA titles while remaining loyal to the Phoenix outfit. Although having played overseas for a number of years Diana has been an integral part of the WNBA and continues to outperform younger players despite her advanced age. Now 42, the 10x WNBA All-Star is an evergreen player and despite failing alongside Britney Griner to uplift the Mercury this season, the veteran is still an important part of the team.

While most individuals are aware of Taurasi’s on court prowess not many people know about her off court affairs. A pretty discreet individual socially, the 5x Olympic gold winner isn’t one for the limelight and falls of the radar every offseason. Although not much is known about Taurasi’s personal life her marriage to former teammate Penny Taylor is quite common knowledge. With Diana being a well-known entity within the women’s basketball landscape here is all one needs to know about her Hall of Famer spouse Penny Taylor.

Penny Taylor is an Australian women’s basketballer who was drafted into the WNBA 3 years prior to Taurasi. Spending the majority of her career with the Phoenix Mercury, Taylor was initially drafted into the league by the Cleveland Rockers. After the team dissolved in 2003 Penny was then picked by the Mercury during the 2004 dispersal draft which saw her join the Phoenix team the same year as Diana.

During her time there the 3x WNBA All-Star flourished into one of the best forwards in the league as she contributed to all three of the Mercury’s championship wins during her time. While she was a common name on the Phoenix roster the Australian, like her partner, played overseas for a couple of years before returning to the WNBA sometime later. In early 2016 Penny announced that she would retire at the end of the season bringing a close to her 19-year long career in an ambiguous manner.

After her retirement, Taylor re-joined the Phoenix Mercury in 2017 as she became the Director of Player Development and Performance. Enjoying the role for a few years the Aussie then became an assistant coach for the Mercury in 2019 before stepping down altogether in 2020.

On 13 May 2017, Penny tied the knot with former teammate Diana Taurasi in what was Taylor’s second marriage.

The 2006 FIBA MVP was previously married to Brazilian volleyball player Rodrigo Rodrigues Gil but later divorced citing irreconcilable differences. Although her first marriage wasn’t successful her second has proved to be prosperous. In 2018 Taurasi and Taylor welcomed their first child as Penny gave birth to their son Leo. The couple then welcomed their second child, a daughter in 2021 after which Penny retired from basketball duties vouching to become a full-time mother.

While Taurasi continues to play even to this day Taylor has now fallen into obscurity as she distanced herself from the public eye. A 2x silver medalist for her international side the 42-year-old was recently recognized for her international career by FIBA as she was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
