Did Skylar Diggins-Smith cross the line with Caitlin Clark, or is this just competitive spirit?

The Seattle Storm and Indiana Fever game is continuing to unravel new layers. First, it was the coaches getting into a heated argument. Then, it was Jewell Loyd ignoring to comment on Caitlin Clark. And this time, it is the veteran Skylar Diggins-Smith. Apparently, the first overall pick this year did something that brought out a reaction from the Seattle crew. Now the fans have a few words for the Storm guard.

With just a few minutes left in the game where the Fever had already established their win, Caitlin Clark hyped up the home crowd. Of course, she wasn’t even seeing where she was walking into. From behind, Skylar Diggins-Smith paced up her walk to knock the rookie. This is exactly the thing that has the fans riling up at the veteran for her underhanded jibe at the rookie.

But what intensified the entire situation was Seattle’s head coach Noelle Quinn taking it up with Christie Sides on the sidelines. At first, even the announcers, Ryan Ruocco and Rebecca Lobo, thought that the passionate conversation between the coaches was because Sides did not clear her bench while Quinn did. Although it may be so, the surfaced clip shows that it might also be because Caitlin Clark, while trying to get the Gainbridge Fieldhouse roaring, did not realize that she was walking to the Storm’s bench.

Still, Skylar Diggins-Smith’s take on the entire thing was not exactly taken in a good light by the WNBA followers.

Skylar Diggins-Smith burns in Caitlin Clark fans’ wrath

A lot of things transpired through Indianapolis on Sunday afternoon. The losing Fever got back on their feet and swept away visitors in the late comeback victory. Then, Jewell Loyd did not talk about Caitlin Clark in the postgame presser. And Smith almost giving Clark an elbow check, also made its round.

The Storm guard’s contribution on the court through it all summed up at 15 points, 0 blocks, and 2 steals. Watching her knock the rookie then had a fan digging at her defense.

“Literally the only time Skylar Diggins Smith got close to defending Clark all night.”

Did Skylar Diggins-Smith cross the line with Caitlin Clark, or is this just competitive spirit?

Have an interesting take?

One fan came with a long reason as to why Skylar Diggins-Smith did what she did. Certainly, this follower believes that the hateful narrative around Clark still continues to play in the league. Albeit it has gone incognito. Over a decade in the league and Smith finds herself amongst those who can’t stand the rookie leading in points and assists. In Sunday’s game, Caitlin Clark even added to the team’s 40% of the total points by either scoring or assisting.

“Skylar instigating that whole thing & by the time Quinn looked, she saw Clark in Seattle’s bench area and that’s why she confronted Christie Sides. She didn’t see Skylar power walk just to bump Clark for no reason. Skylar Diggins-Smith is going to be 35 on August 2nd, she’s in that same group of old WNBA players (current & former) who can’t stand that Clark is kicking ass sooner than anticipated”

Sunday’s game was another prime example of how the 22-year-old guard can turn the tides for her team. Through the trailing and the technical foul, she still got the team back into the winning side. Not just that, over 17,000 people were hyped to see their new star sprinkle her magic. Of course, it meant that the visitors felt what road games are supposed to be like. Resonating with the same, a WNBA follower mentioned how the Storm could not handle the hosts.

“The Seattle Crashouts Couldn’t Handle The Caitlin Clark Effect!!”

Another is also of the opinion that the hate train continues with Smith’s jibe from the back. Add that to the guard’s aid to Quinn during an argument with Sides, Storm – now standing with 10 games lost – was a sore loser in fans’ eyes.

“So Skylar Diggins-Smith did a cheap shot from behind (here we go again) against CC because they were losing bad and then at the end SDS also looked like she was gonna FIGHT coach Christie Sides over some coaching misunderstanding. Mannn BYE, Seattle Sore Losers.”

In the end, all most followers could see was Smith’s action. Not that Clark mistakenly went to their bench or that the Storm played well in the beginning, dominating the first quarter. One person gave their perspective saying how SDS powerwalked over to the rookie to bump her from her path.

“Skylar Diggins-Smith really sped up to hit Caitlin Clark on purpose”

While we cannot say if it was intentional or not, seems like Skylar Diggins-Smith is in deep waters right now. With Sunday’s win, Indiana avoided Seattle to sweep the season series. That too with a 92-75 outing. Next, they will be facing Cheryl Reeve’s Minnesota Lynx in a road game. As for Seattle, they will be traveling to the capital for their final road game for now.
