The 2023 Finals took an unexpected turn as the New York Liberty surprised everyone with a win. Game 3 of the Finals in favor of the Las Vegas Aces was greatly anticipated. As predicted, the reigning champions would make history if they win their second consecutive title. However, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu decided it was time to rest Breanna Stewart and dominate the game from their side. Both athletes’ performances have earned New York Liberty a critical victory to keep their championship aspirations alive.

Sabrina delivered a memorable shot, while Jonquel Jones stopped the overpowering A’ja Wilson from scoring, resulting in a tie in the finals.

The Liberty led the game by 18 points in the first quarter of Game 3 of the WNBA Finals, while the Aces trailed by 12 points and were anxious to widen their advantage. A’ja Wilson, the team’s main player, attempted to hoop the ball but was stopped skillfully by Jonquel Jones. In the meantime, the 2021 MVP smacked the 2023 DPOY hard on the floor, prompting the MC to exclaim, “Wilson, the footwork is uncanny; I just couldn’t quite finish.” Wilson and Jones had a beautiful play in the game, but A’ja couldn’t complete it because Jonquel was harsh on the snub.

And we could hear MC shouting again the following second. “Ionescu…and then the other way, Sabrina with the Deep Three, this looks like Sabrina we see all season long.” Sabrina hit a great three-pointer as she covered the hoop to seal the victory for Liberty.

A comeback victory for the founding franchise

The New York Liberty’s title hopes were resurrected after the team won Game 3 of the Finals. It is a historic achievement for them because they last won a game in the Finals in September 1999. And it is worth mentioning that the New York Liberty is the only founding team that has yet to win a title. The Liberty managed to maintain their No. 2 seed by drafting Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, but they fell short in the Finals.
