The Indiana Fever’s regular season officially came to an end tonight after a 91-92 loss against the Washington Mystics. Finishing with a 20-20 record, the Fever will be looking forward to its first playoff appearance in eight years, starting Sunday in Connecticut. A major part of this growth has been thanks to the Fever’s All-Star rookie, Caitlin Clark, who continues making history on and off the court. From breaking a scoring record to playing in front of a record crowd, the last game of the season provided another glimpse into the “Caitlin Clark Effect“. And the hype surrounding her has understandably influenced her teammates as well.

In the post-game media conference, forward NaLyssa Smith shared, “And I mean, shoutout Caitlin. Shoutout Caitlin. We appreciate her.” According to Smith, Clark’s influence has provided the team with the opportunity to play in front of “sold-out crowds.” And she’s right. Even during the game against the Washington Mystics, the Fever witnessed history in the making.

After being moved to an NBA arena, the Fever vs. Mystics game had 20,711 fans attending the season finale, setting an all-time WNBA attendance record. “This is what we’ve been hoping for forever… you never get used to it,” added Smith. For the Fever franchise, it’s something unbelievable.

From having the worst record in the league to building a record-breaking legacy, the Fever has gradually gained momentum. The franchise has now been part of numerous history-making moments, from all-time attendance to the highest viewership at a home game. However, the bittersweet triumph of the Fever isn’t just limited to viewership records today.

A loss with two historical records for Caitlin Clark and Co.

Indiana Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark kept up the pace even during the last game of this regular season. She racked up 8 points with 8 assists and 5 rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Less than expected? Even so, she ended up setting the record for the most points by a WNBA point guard in a single season.

Clark, 22, has an impressive 761 points across 40 games in this regular season. However, this isn’t the only accomplishment she achieved tonight. Her three-pointers, something she’s highly known for, were on point as well. She was so accurate that she hit her 122nd three of the season against the Mystics.

This allowed her to surpass Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi, who had 121 in 2006, for the second-most three-pointers in a single season. The record is still held by New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu, who nailed 128 three-pointers last year. But now, Clark is right behind her in the history books. A perfect ending to the regular season for Indiana. Now, they’ll be looking to take a step further in their first-round matchup against the Connecticut Sun.
