“Where there is a will, there is a way.” The Chicago Sky on Sunday night showed their will of steel and won their first game against the Indiana Fever in the WNBA 2024. The game had a lot of turnovers and was a tense close match as the Sky trumped the Fever by an 88-87 margin. Behind Chicago’s exemplary display were two rookies- Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso -who stood up when the situation demanded. The two also achieved a rare feat in the process.

While Cardoso scored 16 points with 10 rebounds, Reese scored 25 points with 16 rebounds. With Sunday night’s double-doubles, Reese had her ninth double-double of the WNBA season while the eighth of them came consecutively. Meanwhile, Cardoso scored her second double-double of the season. Plus, they achieved a rare feat by becoming the first WNBA rookie duo to record double-doubles since 1998 on multiple occasions. The same was tweeted by a balling account on the social media platform X on Sunday.

The duo had previously added a double-double against the Indiana Fever on June 16 when Reese had scored 11 points with 13 rebounds whereas Cardoso had scored with 10 points and an equal number of rebounds. Fortunately, this time they had another reason to celebrate since they had won the game.

Meanwhile, noting their spectacular milestone, fans took to the social media networking platform X to join the victory lap.

Fans laud Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso

Twin towers,” one fan commented. The user was pointing to the fact that while Reese averaged a decent 13.2 points per game with 11.1 rebounds per match, Cardoso averaged a spectacular 9.3 points per game with 7.2 rebounds per contest. Therefore, the two were uplifting the Chicago Sky and were one of the prime reasons why the Sky won Sunday’s game.

“and they’re only getting started,” another fan stated. The user highlights the fact that the Chicago Sky played only 15 games which is just the start of the WNBA. More than half of the regular season is remaining after which there will be a post-season. So the fans will get more opportunities to cheer for their favorite stars as the two improve their game and give their best.

“They were right on draft night. No one is gonna out rebound them,” another user commented. While Reese was picked as the seventh overall pick in the WNBA 2024 draft, Cardoso was picked as the third overall pick in the same draft. Furthermore, they have scored exceptional rebounds. While Reese is placed at the second spot in rebounds only next to A’ja Wilson, Cardoso is not far behind with 7.2 rebounds per contest.

“Easy to do when you are dragging defenders down by the hair,” a user criticized them. The picture the user had posted showed two players most probably one of them either being Cardoso or Reese along with the Fever’s Katie Lou Samuelson and how the Sky athlete was trying to drag the Fever’s star while trying to grab the ball.

“If Cardoso can keep herself out of early foul trouble no one going to be able to stop these two,” another netizen remarked. The user was most probably pointing out the instance when Cardoso had committed a personal foul early on in the game when both teams were tied at 10. She then also committed another foul- the free throws for which was given to the Fever’s Aliyah Boston who missed both of them- thankfully for the Sky. Hence, as per the user, Cardoso should try to be away from early fouls to be an unstoppable force in the WNBA.
