Does the support from Angel Reese prove that tough love is essential in shaping future WNBA stars?

When Angel Reese shot into the NCAA scene, she was highly influenced by A’ja Wilson. The Maryland-born started wearing the one-legged sleeve after seeing Wilson don it with flamboyance in the W. Thus, Reese always had an idol to look up to while carving her way. And now, after a successful half-season as a rookie in the coveted league, Reese has revealed another player who has inspired her throughout and helped her understand sports.

Reese tweeted on the social media networking site X that the Seattle Storm star, Skylar Diggins Smith, has been the one she has looked up to for quite some time. “One of them ones that laid the ground for me to walk on when it comes to this beauty side in sports & marketing yourself off the court! Always love you Sky! @SkyDigg4 💋,” Reese tweeted on X. ESPN had announced the release of the WNBA Off Day episode featuring Smith.

The episode is expected to mark a pivotal moment in Smith’s career as it will inspire a whole generation including professional athletes who want to know how to balance motherhood with sports. Smith who became a mother to a son in April 2019 and again birthed a daughter in early 2023 will open up about her children for the first time in TV history. Known for being private, hopefully, she will give her fans a sneak peek into her day-to-day life. The unique thing is that Reese’s confession came just after 3 days of the drama that ensued between Clark and Smith.

During a game between the Indiana Fever and the Seattle Storm on Monday, Clark was seen pumping up the crowd. The only thing that could cause a problem was that she was doing it in front of the Storm bench. After this, Smith was seen going off the court and then she bumped into Clark. The 22-year-old who is not new to physicality in the WNBA, didn’t bother and continued to walk. So, Clark fans presume that this is Reese’s attempt at idolizing Clark’s rivals, even though this is quite debatable. However, for Reese, Smith is not the only idol.

Reese previously revealed in a media interaction that she considers Wilson an idol. The first reason is because of her leg injury scars that have prompted Reese to use a one-foot legging. And then she once again amplified the same emotion when the Las Vegas Aces superstar dropped her collection of pictures on Instagram in July this year.

An excited Reese seeing her snap with Wilson from one of the Aces games against the Chicago Sky, commented, “omgg i made the goats dumppp.” This once again hinted to fans that Reese was a true Wilson admirer.

And now, Reese has shown quite a similar emotion for Smith. Hopefully, for Reese’s fans, Smith will respond with equal love and the two might be seen sharing a few moments whenever they meet on the court next.
