With the end of the 2024 Olympics in Paris, the attention now shifts towards the WNBA. At the same time, there will be a long-standing discussion on who will be worthy enough to carry forward Team USA’s 3-decade dominance in the Olympics. While the snub of Indiana rookie Caitlin Clark this time was a point of disbelief for many, hardly anyone would argue that she will be a focal point in the roster’s selection next time around. But is the spotlight on her leading to the ignorance of everyone else around her? Well, according to some analysts, it is so, and that, in a way, is concerning.
CBK analyst Missy Heidrick recently had a chat with journalist Tony East on the Locked On Women’s Basketball Daily Podcast. Evaluating Team USA’s current generation, Heidrick spared a thought or two on how the future should take its shape. “We have to start thinking about this next evolution of where we go with rosters and the talent,” she said. “I don’t want to have happen is we miss the window. We miss the window with some of this younger talent on the women’s side and they are not part of what continues this dynasty.”
Following this, she centered her argument around all the hype created by the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer in the WNBA. But she opined that there is more to this future chapter of the greatest dynasty than just the 6-foot-guard. “There is more than just Caitlin Clark. There are others and this has to start to be the turnover and the rollover of these rosters. We have to come to grips with it. This needs to happen,” Heidrick further revealed on the podcast.

So far, Caitlin Clark has been spearheading the Rookie of the Year race. The dynamic point guard is sitting at the top of the league in terms of assists. In addition to this, Clark also became the first rookie to register a triple-double. On top of that, she put an exclamation point just before the Olympics break with her 19 assists against the Dallas Wings. This happens to be the WNBA single-game assist record.
Simultaneously, her NCAA rival Angel Reese is putting some miles into her young professional career. Her all-around performance resulted in her conquering Candace Parker’s record for most consecutive double-doubles (15). Further, if not for their respective injuries, Cameron Brink and Kate Martin are other deserving candidates. The impact that Rickea Jackson has had on the Sparks also cannot be ignored.
While Caitlin Clark will sure be dreaming of gold in LA in 2028, currently she is celebrating the achievements of a first-time Olympian.
