Kahleah Copper's jibe at Chicago Sky—confidence or cockiness? What do you think?

Last week, the Phoenix Mercury guard Kahleah Copper fueled up the post-Olympic side of the 2024 WNBA regular season. She registered a hot career night against the Chicago Sky by scoring 29 points and led the Mercury to an 85-65 win in her return to play against her former team. However, that’s not even the best part.

Turns out, when Copper arrived at the Wintrust Arena, she walked into the tunnel donning her old Chicago Sky jersey. This bold move by Copper made waves on the internet. It caught the attention of many including the WNBA legend, Sue Bird, who couldn’t get enough of the guard’s confidence.

In the third installment of Bird and Rapinoe’s A Touch More podcast, Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe celebrated the return of the WNBA from the Olympics and talked about the fashion trends that are being followed by the hooping stars these days. Bringing in a segway, Rapinoe started talking about the incident and said, “You know what also was a big flex was Kah (Kahleah) going back to Chicago in her own jersey,” to which Bird replied on A Touch More podcast, saying “Yea, that was nuts, that was like, DAMN! and lit them up! Oh my god, I was like, Damn, that confidence is crazy, I love it”

This wasn’t the usual tunnel outfit that the WNBA stars don regularly, although, they never fail to make an impact in that aspect. Still, Copper’s move transcended all those looks making a bold and dominating statement.

Kahleah Copper styled her old Sky jersey look in black and white with a long-sleeved white shirt and black shorts, black shoes with white socks. She threw in a pair of black shades and a chic Zara handbag to accessorize the whole look. But, why did she do that? What’s the significance?

Have an interesting take?

It was only a couple of months into this year and Copper had already spent 7 seasons with the Sky, when the franchise zeroed in on the possibility of her trade. Although, she didn’t see it coming as she had already signed a two-year extension with Chicago in 2023 fall, however; she did express her need to compete with the organization when Sky approached free agency.

Hence, the Sky worked things out with Copper to introduce her to opportunities in a really good position, which turned out to be the Phoenix Mercury. The 29-year-old was sent to Mercury in exchange for four draft picks including the NO. 3 overall pick in 2024, and two players- Brianna Turner and Michaela Onyenwere.

“I’m just glad that we were able to come to an agreement and both come out in a win-win situation. I think it was what’s best,” said Copper about her trade. In her first official presser after her trade, she expressed her enthusiasm for the Mercury’s three games against the Sky, which are indeed boding well for her as the Mercury has successfully defeated the Sky in the recent two matchups, with the third one coming up later next month.
