Talks regarding jealousy and resentment have taken somewhat center stage the moment Caitlin Clark entered the professional realm of women’s basketball. From NBA Hall of Famers to eminent analysts, many have spared a thought or two about a possible hate-mongering against the NCAA Division I all-time leading scorer. While many of Clark’s WNBA peers have denied any such development within the league, it appears that their claims are now getting significant backing from the recent comments of Serena Williams.

The 23x Grand Slam women’s singles title winner became the latest in the long line of celebrities having a say regarding the present environment in the WNBA. However, her chain of thoughts revolved around when a reporter drew comparisons between her and Caitlin Clark. Williams went on and said, “So much she has done for women’s basketball. So much of all the players are really doing. Everyone is pushing each other and raising awareness for this amazing sport. How amazing they are in what they do.”

The narrative has been gaining traction a lot in recent times. Popular basketball names like Charles Barkley and LeBron James terming the behavior of Clark’s fellow peers as “petty.” To which many of the senior pros like Chiney Ogwumike and the Aces head coach Becky Hammon protested soon after. Anyhow, after the whole Carter-Caitlin scenario came to the surface, a popular entity from Williams’ profession Martina Navratilova heavily criticized the hostile physicality that the WNBA players are expressing towards Caitlin Clark.

Meanwhile, women’s basketball legend Nancy Lieberman has extended her support to Charles Barkley and others who think that Caitlin Clark has a target on her back.

The 65-year-old was recently alongside Rachel Annamarie DeMita on her podcast to talk more about Clark’s snub from the US Olympics team. Not so long after, she shifted her focus toward Charles Barkley’s comments about the WNBA players. Lieberman said, “There is some jealousy. There is some pettiness as Barkley and Stephen A. Smith and other guys have said.”

In addition to this, she also advocated Caitlin Clark being a part of the Big Three League. While she termed Clark’s advent into the W as “groundbreaking”, Clark’s association with the Big Three according to Lieberman would have been “earth-shattering.”

The story doesn’t seem to end for Caitlin Clark and her fans. Seemingly, more and more divide is being witnessed in this regard with each passing day. It will be interesting to see which side of the narrative prevails eventually.
