Standing for Name, Image, and Likeness, NIL has become prevalent in the last two years. Within a very short period, it has been credited as the reason behind the changing landscape of college sports in the country. Recently, WNBA star A’ja Wilson was asked about her thoughts on the new athlete compensation scheme.

Wilson, who was the NCAA champion in 2017, and has been in the WNBA since 2018, said that she missed out on the opportunity. The 2x WNBA champion stated her plans and what she would’ve done with her NIL money.

The 27-year-old was recently on the All The Smoke podcast. Wilson was asked, “What kind of damage could you have done in college with the NIL?” Wilson exclaimed, “WHAT! I’m showing up to the game, dripping, with a cane, hat to the side.” The 2x WNBA MVP missed out on millions of dollars because this scheme wasn’t in place during her time. She further said, “At the end of the game, if y’all want me to sign something it’s $100 out the back.” She said that she’d have been in “full hustle” mode if it was allowed in her time. “God knew who to give that to”, she added.

The NIL is the outcome of the O’Bannon v NCAA case. For a very long time, the NCAA was benefiting from the athletes without having to pay them anything. In this case, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the athletes, making it a legal claim for them to make money off of their reputation as college athletes. The athletes’ battle against the NCAA lasted for over a decade but was finally decided in favor of those playing sports at a college level.

Although the NIL is now legal, it is still largely unregulated and doesn’t have a proper framework, but that isn’t stopping young athletes from signing some major deals.

The biggest beneficiaries of NIL rule

While the NIL is supposed to benefit all college athletes, some are benefiting way more than others. NCAA champion Angel Reese’s projected NIL earnings are estimated to be around $1.7 million, which is the highest in women’s college basketball. The second spot is occupied by Flau’jae Johnson at $1.1 million, whereas Caitlin Clark makes around $750,000 annually.

However, there are some who dwarf these numbers by a distance. LeBron James‘ son Bronny James’ NIL valuation is inching close to $6 million. Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shadeur Sanders earns around $4.8 million with his NIL deals. These numbers are often equated to the fact that these two are sons of superstar athletes.
