The Aces had been exuding dominance throughout the series, but Game 3 experienced a devastating setback following a shocking defeat when everyone expected the Aces to win the series. In the following game, they fought back with a superior defensive tactic, earning them a critical victory.

The Finals were eagerly anticipated not just because the WNBA’s two great teams were competing, but also because it was seen as an extension of the famed MVP controversy between Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson. Wilson’s consecutive triumph has validated her efforts this season.

The MVP race in the WNBA this year was unlike any other. Three potential candidates were competing for the title, with Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson leading the charge. In the end, Breanna Stewart won the MVP award by a narrow margin. However, many felt that A’ja Wilson was purposely snubbed and pushed to third place, which was highly unacceptable. A’ja Wilson remained silent about her snub for the MVP award, as it was expected to be a fierce competition between the two finalists. However, after winning the championship, Wilson thought it was the right time to speak up about her denial.

During the post-game press conference, she said to the media, “I love being in third place if that gives me a championship at the end.”

The historic MVP race

This year, three athletes’ top three seeds were competing for MVP. Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Suns, A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces, and Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty Only seven points separated Breanna Stewart and Alyssa Thomas. A’ja Wilson was pushed to third place, which was a surprise.

Stewart scored 446 points after receiving 20 votes for first place. Alyssa Thomas of the Connecticut Sun finished second with 439 points, closely followed by Wilson, the 2022 MVP, with 433 points. A panel of 60 sports experts reached a unanimous verdict. A’ja, on the other hand, has responded with a string of champions.
