Is Skylar Diggins-Smith's $400K empire proof that women's sports are finally getting the recognition they deserve?

It all started when Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier announced their Unrivaled Basketball League last year. Since then, the coveted 3*3 league has been inking deals with major WNBA stars. With this, fans are hoping for the league to put forth an amazing tournament. And as their latest agreement comes with Skylar Diggins-Smith, the league has only made clear its purpose of providing top-notch basketball and entertainment to its followers.

On Thursday, Unrivaled through their official social media handles on X and Instagram announced the signing of Skylar Diggins-Smith as the seventeenth player. All credits go to Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier who announced their brainchild with the aim of providing top-level basketball to fans while helping the W stars earn much money during the off-season.

For the same, the league is going to be played in Miami (from January 2025 onwards) so that athletes don’t have to look for international alternatives during the W’s off-season. Plus, the salaries of the league, as per sources, will start from $100,000 which is quite a lucrative deal. The league will have 6 teams with 5 players each which will help in popularizing half-court basketball played in 3*3 leagues. To top that, this is the only league where players will be given equity to help them earn more.

Additionally, by gaining equity in the league, Skylar-Diggins Smith is expected to notch up her already booming $400K worth, as per Celebrity Networth. Smith, as part of her WNBA salary, is on a $208,219 contract with the Seattle Storm. Apart from this, she has an endorsement deal with Bodyarmor SuperDrink, which has helped her in getting more money.

In order to expand her empire, the 34-year-old has also invested in Dibbs which is a real-time card marketplace. And her inking an agreement with Unrivaled can only boost her earnings. Meanwhile, there are 15 other players apart from Skylar Diggins-Smith and Stewart who have signed with Unrivaled.

Have an interesting take?

Other than the co-founders of the league, the roster so far includes Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum, and Jewell Loyd among other. Their addition has certainly attracted a lot of fans and got them talking about the league. However, a major watershed moment came for the league when the WNBA rookie Angel Reese signed.

Reese has been performing exceptionally well in the league and has overtaken the double-double queen A’ja Wilson in rebounds. Plus, most of her home games are a sellout. Hence, Unrivaled is expected to benefit a lot from Reese’s contract. Following Reese were talented players like Dearica Hamby, Marina Mabrey, and Allisha Gray.
