WNBA Hall of Famer Sheryl Swoopes has never shied away from speaking her mind, even if it’s against Caitlin Clark. Swoopes always shares her perspective, regardless of the backlash. On the September 17th episode of Gil’s Arena podcast, she dismissed Clark’s dominance in her debut season. Swoopes knew her comments would spark criticism, but she wasn’t afraid to speak up. However, this time, Clark isn’t the focus of Swoopes’ latest remarks.
Instead, the Houston Comets icon turned her attention to Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. On the September 26th episode of ‘Unapologetically Angel’, hosted by the 2024 All-Star Angel Reese, Swoopes discussed several topics surrounding the WNBA. During the conversation, she shared her thoughts on the new 3×3 league scheduled to start in January 2025. “I don’t really know how I feel about the format,” Swoopes admitted.

‘Unrivaled’ is new territory and the reason behind Swoopes’ remark, her uncertainty about the concept. The league follows an innovative 3-on-3 full-court format, designed to give players better opportunities to shine. Nonetheless, there were aspects of ‘Unrivaled’ that earned her praise.

“Here’s what I love: I love what Fee and Stewie are doing with ‘Unrivaled’, giving players ownership stakes and the chance to play in Miami during the offseason. I think it’s great,” Swoopes added. And she’s right. The benefits of signing with the Collier-and-Stewart-led league are significant. Lucrative contracts and playing opportunities in the U.S. top the list. For those unaware, the new league set to debut in 2025 promises players some of the highest pay packages, with a minimum salary of $100,000. But Swoopes wasn’t the only one sharing her thoughts on the podcast.
Even host Angel Reese weighed in

As Swoopes listed the advantages of joining ‘Unrivaled’, Reese nodded in agreement. Eventually, she jumped in and shared her thoughts: “Being able to stay in the States, I mean, they’re putting us up in a house, and we’re going to be traveling, playing in Miami.” Clearly, Chi-Town Barbie is excited about her ‘Unrivaled’ debut.

For Reese, the option to stay in the U.S. is the most appealing aspect of the league. In fact, this wasn’t the first time she voiced her opinion on the topic. During the inaugural episode of her podcast, she expressed that the league is “the safest option for a lot of people,” noting that many players are apprehensive about going overseas.
“I won’t lie, I’m too scared to go overseas,” Reese revealed. This is why she’s ecstatic about Unrivaled launching in Miami. And she’s not alone—her fans are eagerly awaiting her return after her rookie season was cut short due to a left-hand injury. But the question is: Will she be able to adjust herself to new format?
