Does A'ja Wilson deserve more recognition from fans, just like the legends before her?

A’ja Wilson. U’nanimous. The 2024 WNBA MVP was crowned today as her season-long grind came to fruition. One of the most effective periods in this title win was when the 28-year-old started donning a white t-shirt during her pregame appearances, which according to her, was to concentrate on the task at hand, i.e., winning. However, when on Sunday, the t-shirt was released for the fans to buy, the WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes found it difficult to order, similar to how Wilson’s mentor Dawn Staley had a hard time getting her hands on the jersey of a certain football player.

Days after celebrating Wilson’s milestone of becoming the first W player to cross the 1000-point landmark in a single season, Swoopes once again looked to celebrate the 28-year-old achievement as she wished to buy herself Wilson’s apparel. A fan had taken to X to post the screenshot of her latest A’One purchase, announcing that the 3x MVP’s collection had dropped on the official Nike app.

The Hall of Famer, who is a little new to technology, accepted that she didn’t have the app and requested for someone to order her a tee. “I don’t have the app. Somebody get me one…PLEASE! I got you!” Swoopes pleaded. Notably, on Sunday, Wilson was named as the unanimous choice for the WNBA MVP title, becoming only the second player in history to do so after Cynthia Cooper who had bagged the title in 1997. Hence, the craze for this t-shirt increased as fans went to Nike’s app in order to gift themselves the tee, a thing for which Wilson worked hard enough.

The Las Vegas Aces had a sluggish start to the season. Nonetheless, Wilson took the role of their primary two-way player. In all her first 5 games, the 2023 WNBA Finals MVP hit double-doubles, making her intentions clear of filling in the shoes of her injured teammate Chelsea Gray. From there on, Wilson was an unstoppable force, becoming the first W star to lead the league during a single season in three main categories: points, blocks, and rebounds. Therefore, the MVP award was a much-deserved redemption for Wilson after what had happened last year. Meanwhile, Nike had a surprise for Wilson’s fans on the special occasion.

Wilson had signed a deal with Nike when she was drafted as the number one pick in 2018. However, fans had to wait for 6 years for the announcement of her signature shoe deal. But once that was done, she soon started releasing a line of products with the billion-dollar company. And one of them is this white t-shirt which is priced at a decent $40. Though Wilson is expected to release the A’One apparel and sneaker collection in the Spring of next year, this release on the occasion of her achievement came as a good surprise for fans.

The South Carolina star had also tweeted the image of this tee on Saturday, which many opined was a warning for the Seattle Storm. Notably, since the time she started donning the white tee, Wilson’s averages have touched the roof with 26.14 points per game and 12 rebounds per game during those 7 matchups. However, when it comes to Swoopes, she encountered the same problem that Wilson’s mentor Staley had on Saturday.

Dawn Staley finds it hard to navigate technology

Eager to make a comeback in the Big 12, the CU Buffs were up against the Baylor Bears on Saturday. While the Bears led the game by a 31-24 margin, Shedeur Sanders’ Hail Mary helped level the score. The clash went into overtime as the Buffs star Travis Hunter saved one for his team that took the social media by storm. Travis’s exceptional gameplay helped the Buffs win the game by a 38-31 tally and earned him a fan in the legendary Staley. However, when the South Carolina Gamecocks head coach wanted to buy herself a jersey, she had to face a fate similar to Swoopes.

“Hey @CUBuffsFootball….I need a Travis Hunter jersey asap! I ain’t hard to find! (laughing emoji) Thank you in advance!,” Staley tweeted on X. The message was a reminder that Staley had been following the Buffs through the season and had predicted their win against Colorado State in week 3 during an appearance on ESPN’s  “College GameDay.”

Hopefully, both stars, Hunter and Wilson, will continue their dominance. Meanwhile, some relative, friend, or fan might fulfill the Swoopes’s and Staley’s wishes. As for Wilson, fans would not like waiting for the A’One collection next year as it will put the Staley mentee on par with legends such as Michael Jordan, who also had an apparel collection with Nike.
