Is Sheryl Swoopes right to call out the Chicago Sky, or is she overreacting?

The surprise firing of Teresa Weatherspoon has left many open-mouthed. Especially as the Chicago Sky will look for a third coach in four years. Things have been in disarray since the team won their first championship less than three years ago with James Wade. But he resigned mid-season to go to the Toronto Raptors, and Emre Vatansever was never taken higher than the interim tag. But Weatherspoon did better, and Sheryl Swoopes is in disbelief.

On the latest episode of Queens of the Court, Swoopes discusses the Sky’s statement and how they want Teresa Weatherspoon to stay a part of the family. “Spoon don’t wanna be a part of that family. You treated her like trash, I’m sorry but you did. And if the expectations were to make the playoffs, win the championship, or get fired, she wouldn’t have taken the job, I’m 100% sure,” Swoopes says angrily.

Co-host Jordan Robinson agrees and points out how players were injured or traded too much for this team to work. Not only did Kahleah Copper, expected to lead the team alongside TSpoon, request a trade prior to the season, but Courtney Williams and Alanna Smith had also refused to sign after entering free agency. If not enough, midway through the season, guard Marina Mabrey requested her trade.

And yet Weatherspoon did it. “But even through all of that, they were like a game or two away from getting that playoff spot! First of all, she walked into a hot mess. A hot mess. If you look at the history of the Chicago Sky… everybody is well aware of what has happened with the Chicago Sky. Coaches don’t get a long opportunity…I am livid.”

The Hall of Famer then goes on to list all the injuries in the Sky at the beginning of the season. But she reiterates that despite whatever was thrown her way, Weatherspoon managed to whip Chiacgo into the shape of a team that almost made it to the playoffs. Per stats, there were only two games where the Chicago Sky had a full healthy roster. Chennedy Carter, Angel Reese, Kamilla Cardoso, and Diamond DeShields, all the crucial players sat the bench at times especially unwished for.

Toward the tail-end of the season, Reese hurt her wrist in a season-ending injury and ultimately had to go through surgery. But confident that she would find Weatherspoon back in 2025, the Sky rookie is heartbroken to see her head coach go. But meanwhile, calls for Sheryl Swoopes in the Windy City are rising.

Not Caitlin Clark, but Sheryl Swoopes could coach her rival

Have an interesting take?

Ever since the firing news came to light, calls for Sheryl Swoopes as the head coach of the Chicago Sky have intensified. The 3x MVP has the resume to match and Angel Reese even asked her point blank to come coach the Sky on her podcast. But interestingly, that pitch was made before Weatherspoon’s firing. The Houston Comets icon also said “yes” to Reese, whom she has supported all season long.

“Would I coach you one day? I would love to,” the retired pro told Reese, “I would love to. I would so love to work with you. And I’d love to work with Chennedy Carter.” The only problem might be her lack of coaching experience, something which Weatherspoon also received heavy criticism for.

Now that Weatherspoon really is gone, maybe the Chicago Sky need to look closer rather than going out to hunt a new head coach. Who knows, we might see Sheryl Swoopes in Chicago colors next season!
