Sheryl Swoopes picks Chelsea Gray over A'ja Wilson—Is Gray the real MVP in your eyes?

The Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson has won hearts this season. Averaging a career-high 26.9 points per game with 11.9 rebounds per game, she has led the Aces to the semi-finals. While this is the best one can do as a unanimous MVP, the WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes doesn’t look satisfied with her performance. Owing to this, she chose another Aces star as her desired teammate over Wilson.

“I will say this I think Chelsea Gray is starting to Chelsea Gray again. She’s getting back to the old Chelsea Grayb ways and Chelsea gray to me is like I said earlier I’ve played with some good ones. Chelsea Gray if there’s a player that I wish I could have played with I would Chelsea I love her game. She’s a big strong bodyguard, she does crazy stuff with the ball. She’s a great teammate. We know what A’ja’s gonna do. If Chelsea can get back to her old form and then you can have other players,” Swoopes stated.

The Las Vegas Aces star Chelsea Gray had suffered a foot injury in Game 3 of the WNBA 2023 Finals series while plying her trade against the New York Liberty. Following this Gray had to miss game 4 of the WNBA 2024 Finale as well as the first 12 games of the WNBA 2024. Once she made a comeback, she didn’t look to be in the ideal form. Overall she averaged 8.6 points per game with 4.9 assists per game in the regular season this year. The 31-year-old scored paltry in most of the games due to which her teammate Wilson had to amp up her game.

However, that has changed in the playoffs as the 2022 WNBA Finals MVP hit 16 points with 7 assists during Game 1 against the Storm on Sunday and 12 points with 9 assists during Game 2 on Tuesday. Her contribution has definitely helped the Aces have a clean sweep in Round 1 as she averages a decent 14 points per game with 8 assists per game in the playoffs. And perhaps this will take the Aces towards their third consecutive Championship title. And now with Swoopes showing confidence in her over Wilson, could probably make one of the best stories of a comeback this season.

A’ja Wilson lauds Chelsea Gray

While the Aces looked to be in trouble at the beginning of the season, Gray’s timely comeback looks to be the X factor in their gameplay. She along with Wilson and Kelsey Plum scored the team’s combined 28 first-quarter points during Game 2 against the Seattle Storm. Hence, fans are hoping that Gray continues the same form and helps her team win the Championship title. Talking about Gray’s on-song performances in the playoffs, Wilson paid gratitude to the Aces’ veteran leader.

“Chelsea, for coming back from an injury, taking care of business, getting us organized, that’s a lot. But she comes in and makes sure that our heads are straight,” Gray stated. The moment was a big one for Gray as she cried her heart out when the Aces advanced to the semis, hugging her family. Hopefully, Gray will be able to continue her exceptional gameplay.
