From assists to three-pointers and even triple-doubles, she has her name engraved in gold under all those records. In fact, the 22-year-old Iowa native is on the cusp of wrapping up her debut season as one of the best rookies in the league’s history. But apparently, this isn’t enough for Sheryl Swoopes to give her flowers.
On September 18th, Sheryl Swoopes made an appearance on Gilbert Arenas’ podcast show to discuss Caitlin Clark’s amazing rookie season. As they broke down the Indiana Fever star’s incredible stats this year, her early struggles, and the team’s 9-4 run, Swoopes chimed in. According to her, Clark was doing great but isn’t dominating yet.
“Those are hell of numbers… but to me, that’s not dominating,” Swoopes declared. This led Rashad McCants to ask, with curiosity, if Clark would be considered dominating if she increased her numbers like A’ja Wilson. Both Gilbert Arenas and Sheryl Swoopes agreed on that point.

The entire episode dives deeper, but it seems Swoopes agreed that Clark had been incredible. However, she hadn’t met her specific criteria. Within minutes, Clark’s supporters rallied in the comment section to add insights.

Here’s what they said:
Seems like spectators aren’t in for Swoopes’ views any longer. “Swoopes should not be given air time. Her value is zero & it just keeps emboldening her with a paycheck,” wrote one X user. Some spectators even concluded that Swoopes’ words had no value. But this isn’t the first time Swoopes has shared something unacceptable for Clark’s fanbase.
A couple of days ago, she made headlines for not including Clark’s name while giving shoutouts to Indiana Fever standouts. For her, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell were game-changers, but she missed mentioning Caitlin Clark. A fan took notice and wrote, “At this point, she needs to shut up. She’s already proven that she’s not a fan.”

Swoopes addressed the situation when she had a back-and-forth with Stephen A. Smith. According to her, ignoring Clark, or rather naming her best players was just her view. All this has led viewers to a conclusion. “She turns into the Player Hater whenever CC comes into the convo,” added another spectator. Some even tried to give Swoopes a reality check, mocking her own stats from when she was playing.
“Swoopes won 3 MVPs in the W with lesser numbers, interesting.” By the time Swoopes left basketball, she had a career average of 15 points, with 3.2 assists. Clark, on the other hand, in her debut year, is averaging 19.5 PPG and featuring 8.4 APG, the most in the WNBA. In consideration, another penned, “CC is responsible for like 45% of her teams points. How is that not dominant? lol” But still, for Swoopes, it wasn’t enough.
