Are Caitlin Clark's fans really 'mean and evil,' or is Sheryl Swoopes overreacting?

The Caitlin Clark-Sheryl Swoopes fiasco is not new. While Swoopes comes up with argument after argument to criticize Clark, the 22-year-old has kept mum about her side of the story. After ignoring Clark’s contribution for the Indiana side, Swoopes also kept silent during the Las Vegas Aces game against the Dallas Wings on Tuesday when her co-host praised Clark. And now, when the Indiana Fever clashed with the Wings on Sunday, Swoopes despite being an analyst for Dallas was nowhere to be found. This raised a lot of eyebrows especially that of Clark’s fans who slammed Swoopes. However, in her defense, the Hall of Famer revealed the truth behind her hating Clark.

“FYI, I was never supposed to do the game. Also, I do not hate Caitlin. It’s a lot of her fans that are just flat out mean and evil. I see that does not apply to you,” Swoopes stated on the social media networking platform X. Swoopes’ absence from the Dallas Wings game had one of Clark’s fans criticize the 53-year-old for not announcing the game. As per the fan, the situation had come to this when Clark took the hardwood, the 4x WNBA Champion didn’t want to be a part of it. He further incited Swoopes to come and clear it all. “Shame on everyone for turning this into a sideshow Sheryl should make a public statement and clear all this up…” the fans enumerated on X.

Fans had taken a jibe at Swoopes when she had come on X after the Fever’s blowout 19-point win over the Sky on Saturday and praised Kelsey Mitchell. Fans though were satisfied with her applause, didn’t like that Clark who had played a mainstay role in the backcourt along with Mitchell, hitting her career-high 31 points was nowhere mentioned in Swoopes’ words of praise.

Some fans went as far as calling Swoopes an “awful human being” while others tagged her a CC hater. Therefore, now when in a recent incident a fan urged Swoopes to share her side of the story, the Hall of Famer did not shy from directing her anger at Clark fans who have frequently been toxic to Swoopes. But, why does Swoopes time and again jump into the controversy against Clark?

Sheryl Swoopes’ problems with Caitlin Clark

What’s your perspective on:

Are Caitlin Clark's fans really 'mean and evil,' or is Sheryl Swoopes overreacting?

Have an interesting take?

While there are no definite reasons for Swoopes’ problems with Clark, fans say that it all started when Clark during the 2022-23 season broke Swoopes’ NCAA record. Swoopes had hit 177 points in 1993 during the NCAA tournament in the 5 games she played. However, in 2022-23 when Clark took the Iowa Hawkeyes to the Championship Finale, she scored 191 points.

But, to speak about the eternal nature of her record, Swoopes pointed out that while Clark did break the record, she did it in 6 games whereas Swoopes had set it in 5 games. Hence, as per Clark’s fans, Swoopes tried to downplay Clark’s efforts and since then there, has been a chain of events where Swoopes has either ignored Clark’s performances or indirectly been critical of her.

But now that Swoopes has come forward to share her take, hopefully, Clark’s fans will realize that all she was doing was her job. And perhaps, this will put an end to the Clark-Swoopes fiasco.
