Do you think Sabrina Ionescu's superstitions actually help the NY Liberty perform better?

For the New York Liberty, Sabrina Ionescu has turned out to be the standout. In fact, Liberty’s sharpshooter has contributed the most to help the team secure a playoff berth this season. The three-time All-Star and Olympic gold medalist never misses a chance to perform as a potent offensive force alongside her teammates, Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones. As a result, she has become the team’s leading scorer with an impressive 19.9 points per game. However, all that success, as per Ionescu’s beliefs, isn’t just limited to her skills on the court.

On August 22nd, Sabrina Ionescu made a late-night television appearance on the latest edition of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” to discuss a range of topics around her game. “I’m just very superstitious,” she revealed. Over three decades since Sabrina Ionescu’s father left Romania, but the roots aren’t lost in the family. Born to Romanian-American parents, the Liberty icon was raised in a Romanian-speaking household, and her culture has been a significant part of her life in many ways.

From a seat in a bus to private morning shootarounds, everything matters for the Liberty star. “So it’s like we’ve got to sit in the same place on the bus. The layup lines have to be the same. Like, everything has to be in rhythm. It’s part of the plan. If we lose, we change it just a little bit,” she added.

Even on game day, she never misses out on being “superstitious.” For her, it can be the reason for a win or a loss. For her New York Liberty teammates, on the other hand, it’s something that started with Ionescu. “No, we started. We started from the jump,” she revealed. Now, everyone follows what she says and she admits “it’s working.” But it seems like Ionescu tripped on one of these patterns, casting an unfortunate eye on her game.

She appeared on the show the night before the New York Liberty faced the Dallas Wings. Only half an hour before today’s game, Ionescu was announced to be “out” due to a neck injury, the cause of which remains unknown. Though her status was updated much later, she’s been enduring the injury since the last game.

During the game against the Las Vegas Aces, she sensed the trouble in her neck. But as the team emerged victorious with a score of 79-67, the focus shifted to the win. However, now her neck injury has cost her two games. According to an update from the New York Liberty, the injury is reported to be a minor problem at the moment.

For now, she’ll be replaced temporarily by players like Ivana Dojkic, Kayla Thornton, and Marquesha Davis. She’s expected to return for the upcoming game against the Connecticut Sun on August 25th. What do you think? Will her absence impact the Liberty roster? Stay tuned to find out!
