It has been over nine months since Russian authorities detained WNBA champion Brittney Griner. Fans and athletes worldwide have taken to social media to extend their support and advocate for the release of Griner. Recently, a valuable member of the WNBA community pledged allegiance to Griner’s cause after she broke her silence on the whole situation.

Since her arrest in August, Brittney Griner has been making the headlines every other day. Griner has spent the better part of the year in a prison cell in Russia. She had been charged of alleged drug possession, following which there was large scale talk about the situation. Many athletes and famous personalities have spoken out against the detention of Griner. Some NBA stars such as Stephen Curry and Kyrie Irving continue to plead for her return to USA. Another one of them is Becky Hammon, who recently spoke about the detention in an ESPN interview.

Becky Hammon has some strong words regarding Brittney Griner’s detainment

In an interview with ESPN, Becky Hammon addressed Griner’s situation, and had some honest words on the matter. Hammon called the detention and arrest of Griner ‘wrong.’ Hammon further said, “It was a gut punch. There’s so many things that are normal over there that I’m like, ‘It’s not normal.’ … She’s been turned into a political pawn and it’s really unfortunate. The international world really needs to pay attention.”?Hammon played a better of her career in Russia, which granted her citizenship.?

Talking about her experience in Russia as a player and a citizen, Hammon reiterated the ?out of the blue? nature of Griner?s sentence. Hammon declared Griner’s situation as unfortunate, and strongly advocated for her release while pleading with international powers. Meanwhile, the WNBA legend?s appeal against her sentence was recently declined, meaning that she will have to serve her time.

Becky Hammon played in the WNBA for over a decade. She also spent extensive time overseas playing in countries like Spain and Russia. Apart from this, she has also won an Olympic bronze medal back in 2008. After retiring, she began coaching, and even worked under the likes of Greg Popovich. Now, she is a WNBA champion as a head coach herself.
