Caitlin Clark vs. Angel Reese: Who's the real MVP in this heated WNBA rivalry?

The regular season is about done, and it’s almost time to cast votes for Rookie of the Year honor! Is it going to be Angel Reese, who’s out with an injury after a phenomenal season? Or will it be Caitlin Clark, who seems to be bent on breaking every rookie award in the W possible? Either way, the Indiana Fever rookie has support from around the country. Of course, her boyfriend Connor McCaffery and his family had to speak too.

Patrick McCaffery, Connor’s younger brother, was a significant presence on the Indiana rookie’s Instagram yesterday. The two have been friends before she started dating his brother, and the friendship continues! Today, Clark posted pictures from her team’s brilliant home victory, the last for the season, over the Dallas Wings on Sunday. She captioned it, “📍indy 🔥.” Following this, the Bulldogs star took to the comments section to say, “like this if cc is your ROY (these votes count for the award)”

CC is certainly the top choice for many as Rookie of the Year! Being instrumental in taking a team to playoffs, since 2016, when at the start of the season, things looked bleak is no small thing. In addition, there is always the major visibility that the No. 22 has helped bring to women’s basketball in general, although part of that has, of course, got to do with her epic rivalry from her college days.

Angel Reese was head-to-head with her NCAA nemesis at the beginning of the season, even if she cooled down slightly near the end. Averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, the seventh-overall pick still made a case for herself and she’s not going anywhere. Nevertheless, of course, where the Clarks and McCaffery’s are concerned, the Indiana player is their first choice.

While Caitlin Clark and Connor McCaffery have been going out since April 2023, the Des Moines native was actually friends with the younger McCaffery brother first. “We were always friends,” Connor told the Times-Union in March. “She was friends with Patrick. I was friends with her. Our teams hung out together. We had good relationships with the women’s team and we just eventually started hanging out.”

Safe to say, the McCaffery family is all in on the Caitlin Clark mania! In return, the W star has been as supportive of her boyfriend’s journey in the basketball world too. After his NCAA career, McCaffery is following in his dad’s footsteps and dabbling into coaching.

Son of Fran McCaffery, Connor was always a popular presence in his alma mater. And now while he watches his girlfriend soar to the heights of the WNBA, he’s on a coaching path for up-and-coming basketball players. “It’s a way in,” Connor told the ‘Des Moines Register’. “It’s an entry-level job. You’ve got to work hard and work your way up. That’s obviously what I want to do.”

After working with the Indiana Pacers for one year, Connor is heading to the Butler Bulls, and Caitlin Clark couldn’t be happier. Taking to her Instagram, the Fever rookie reposted a picture of the news announcement from the team with the caption, “Yayyy!!! So happy for you.”

What’s even better is that Patrick too will be a part of the Butler Bulldogs from the next NCAA season. From being a student to his father at the University of Iowa, he will complete his final eligibility year under his brother. Not to mention, he will also get to hang out with his old friend Clark more often now.
