Stephanie White is coming home to win with Indianapolis once again. “I am incredibly proud and honored to return home to Indiana and lead the Fever during such a pivotal moment in this franchise’s history, as well as during such an important time throughout women’s athletics,” she shared in a recent press release.
After making her mark as Indiana’s Miss Basketball in high school, driving Purdue to a championship run in 1999, and playing on the Indiana Fever’s first-ever roster, White’s journey with the Fever has come full circle. She also contributed as an assistant coach during their 2012 championship victory. Now, in her second stint with the team, she’s back with a sense of unfinished business, ready to bring her experience and determination to a new chapter.

Stephanie White first joined the Indiana Fever as an assistant coach in 2010. She familiarized herself with the franchise and the current roster for the next four years, gaining valuable insight. However, with her growing experience, she was ready to take the lead. In 2014, she was promoted to head coach for the Fever.
This marked a turning point for the team, as White’s in-depth knowledge of the franchise and roster helped them secure a spot in the WNBA Finals. Though they ultimately fell short, White and the Fever made a comeback.
Her dedication paid off as she guided the team to their third conference title win after victories in 2009 and 2012, all within the 2015 season. For White, it was her second time claiming the championship title with the Fever, having previously done so as an assistant coach.
It’s a new season, with a new roster, but the same process
After her time with the Fever, White stepped into a new role as head coach for the Vanderbilt Commodores in 2016, where she led the team for five years before taking an abrupt break. Her career took off when she became head coach of the Connecticut Sun. White proved her coaching prowess as a natural leader, guiding the Sun to back-to-back playoff appearances.

Her influence wasn’t just limited to here; she even helped the team trail as the top defensive team in the WNBA. However, despite her success and impact, her contract with the Sun wasn’t renewed for longer. That’s when the Fever saw an opportunity, acting quickly to bring White back to the franchise.
It all happened within days of Christie Sides’ departure. On November 1st, White agreed to lead the young, improved Fever roster, aiming for their next championship title. Just three days after being hired, White made her way back to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, where she was welcomed with enthusiasm by fans and several Indiana Fever players.
“It’s going to be really hard for me not to get emotional today, but with all these familiar faces in the building, this is truly coming home for me,” she said in front of Indiana Fever sensation Caitlin Clark.
With expectations raised, White is ready to lead the team forward
By the time Sides departed, she held a 33-47 record over two seasons, including a solid 20-20 in 2024. White also guided Indiana to their first playoff spot since 2016. Though they were eliminated in the first round by White’s Connecticut Sun. “It has been such an experience with this franchise for nearly 25 years, from Day 1. And the opportunity to come home and lead this young, exciting team is really thrilling,” added White.
Now, White has two main tasks ahead as head coach. First, to lift the Fever into WNBA championship contention. Second, to achieve this alongside the incredibly talented phenom Caitlin Clark. Handling a talent like Clark is no easy task, as the 2024 Rookie of the Year has already proved her worth in every game.

“I’m a forward-thinking, outside-the-box kind of coach. I like to challenge them on multiple levels, and they’re a high basketball IQ team, so I want to give them the freedom to make plays,” added White.
Averaging 19.1 points and a league-leading 8.4 assists in her debut season, Clark hasn’t just made waves—she’s shattered records in assists, scoring, and three-pointers. Now, merging her dynamic play with the Fever’s roster is at the top of White’s agenda. And White is ready to dive in.

“They’re an exciting team to watch, and I think offensively we can be more creative. I believe we can tap into each player’s unique strengths in new ways,” she shared while closely watching Clark and Boston. But White’s mission doesn’t stop there. She’s not just focused on reshaping the Fever; she’s set on elevating women’s basketball to unprecedented levels.
